Vanceboro Aldermen Select New Chief of Police In a recent meeting the Vanceboro Aldermen selected Herman Lewis of near Vanceboro to replace Billy Jewell as Chief of Police. Jewell resigned the position to take a job as a deputy with the Craven County Sheriff's Department. Lewis received his on-the-job training from the New Bern Poiice Department where he worked as a policeman for severai years. Other requirements were met throught attending police school and receiving certification from the state of North Caroiina. L-R Shelton Kelly, John BIrcher, Kellie Wiggins, John Stilley W C H S Students Named Who's Who In Music The 1987 edition of WHO'S WHO IN MUSIC will carry the names of four students from West Craven High School, who have been selected as being among the country's most outstanding high school musicians. Campus nominating co mmittees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracgrricuiar activities and potential for continued success. students selected from more than 1,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations. Outstanding students have been honored in the Who's Who annual directories since the first publication in 1934. Students named this year from West Craven High School are: West Craven High School Band; Mr. Shelton Carl Kelly, Mr. John Charles BircherMiss Kellie Lorraine Wiggins, and Mr. John Ciyde Stiily. As DECA Donates To Caswel Richard L. Cannon III Cannon Selected to Outstanding Young Men of America The Board of Advisors for the Outsanding Young Men of America awards program announced today that Richard L. Cannon iil, 3004 Phillips Road, Greenville, N.C. has been selected for inclusion in 1986 edition of OUTSTAND— ING YOUNG MEN OF AMERICA. Mr. Cannon is the son of Mr. & Mrs. R.L. Cannon Jr. of Vanceboro. Now in its 24th year, the OYMA program is designed to honor and encourage except ional young men between the ages of 21 and 36 who have distinguished themseives in many fields of endeavor, such as service to community, professional leadership, academic achievement, business advancement, culturai accomplishments, and civic and political participat ion. Achievements in these areas are the resuit of dedication, responsibility, and drive for excelience— qualities which deserve to be recogniz ed and remembered. Mr. Cannon, along with fellow Outstanding Young Men throughout North America, were selected after 150,000 nominations were received from poiiticai leaders. University and College officials, clergymen, business leaders, as well as from various civic groups and community organizations. Each young man wili be represented by his biographicai entry in this prestigious annual awards continued on page 3 Joann Rachid, Marketing Student at West Craven High School presents a check to Mr. Danny Rice for the Caswell Fund. Last week at its reguiar club meeting, the West Craven High Schooi DECA Chapter presented a check for the sum of $293.49 to Mr. Danny Rice for use in the Casweil School of Kinston Christmas Fund. The Marketing Students of the WCHS DECA Chapter raised the money by soliciting from neighbors, and friends or donating one or two hours of their pay to the worthy project. Students at the Casweii School do not have the funds for Christmas presents and are dependent upon outside groups to donate money for special occasions. This is a yearly project of the WCHS DECA Chapter. Joann Rachid, chairperson of Civic Consciousness Committee, was the director of the project. Local High School Band Members Named to All- American Hall of Fame The locai West Craven High Schooi was recentiy honored when 8 of its students were named to All-American honors according to information received from Jeff Maynard Director of the West Craven High School Band. They are as follows;Shelton Kelly, John BIrcher, Erica Allinen, Linwood Fulcher, Barry Squires, Rex Lilly, John Stilly, and Amanda Faulkner. The All-American Hall of Fame Band Award is made annually by the All-American Hall of Fame Foundation a national, non-profit organizat ion created to identify and recognize outstanding high school musicians throughout the United States.
