Bulldogs To Be Inexperienced WASHINGTON DAILY NEWS, AUGUST 24, 1988—PAGE 5A BELHAVEN — At the end of the 1988 school year, John A. Wil kinson High School will consoli date with Bath to form Northside High School. Mike Proctor, who heads into his second year at the Bulldog football helm, is well aware of that. Proctor present concern, however, is getting his team ready for the season — a curtain-closing season that will open at Beaufort County rival Washington. "I’m not worrying about the fu ture,” Proctor said. “I’m leaving that open.” He did say he liked the area and would like to remain. Thus far in the preseason, Proc tor has been surprised. He opened camp the first day of August with 16 players. Now there are 40 — including 15 lettermen from last year’s 2-8 edition. Proctor is quick to point out 6TiIy-six lettermen were starters. “We are going to start a lot of upperclassmen,” he said. “But a lot of them haven’t played be fore.” How quickly they mature will be a factor in Belhaven’s success this season, Proctor said. The preseason practice attitude has been impressive, Proctor said. ’“^ey are hustling and we are getting good leadership from the seniors,” he said. Kenny Davis, a 6-2 senior, and Maurice Green, a 6-foot junior, are locked in a battle for the nod at the quarterback slot in the Bulldogs’ I-formation offense. Davis throws well and has “adequate” quickness while Green is a “burner,” running the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds, Proc tor said. Dexter Dills, another speedster, and. Demetrius Sadler are slated for the tailback slot. “Dexter has strong legs and he’s a good running back,” Proctor said. “Sadler is a hard-nosed kid. He only weighs 150 pounds but 50 pounds of that is pure, solid heart.” The Bulldogs’ leading returning rusher, Horace Griffin, and first- year performer Mike Cox are squaring off for the fullback spot. Griffin was moved from the offensive line last season and placed at fullback. He rushed for 300 yards and is one of the strongest players on the squad with a 325-pound bench press. Griffin may be moved to the offen sive line while Tony O’Neal and Eric Canady will man the tight The 2nd Season NCHSAA Grid Playoffs First Round Friday November 13 District Friday November 20 Sectionals Friday November 27 Regionals Friday December 4 State Friday December 11 end spots, Proctor said. For the Bulldogs, the key, Proc tor surmised, would be how well the offensive line comes on. “Last year, we had a line that could do it but no backs,” he said. “This year, we have some backs but... Dax Hawkins, a senior, will lead the Bulldog defense. “Dax will light you up if he gets a shot,” said Proctor. “He likes to hit. He’ll play linebacker.” The strong candidates for the secondary are Maurice Green, a junior, and Skeet Spencer, another junior. Slated for the line are: Thomas Griffin, Horace Griffin, Lester Pierce and Stephen Barber. Andreas O’Neal, an all-TBC per former on the defensive line, has departed for North Carolina State on an athletic grant-in-aid. “We aren’t very deep,” said Proctor/|We|revei^smallandwe KB!‘32.-4 9 Member, of ihe 1988 Hellmven Bulldog food, all lea.n are: front roK, from left, manager, and trainer,, on the ,eeond row, from eft, Chuek Fo,ter, Jo,h Hopkin,, Matthew WUkin,, Maiiriee Greene, llendriek Ehron, Tony WUliam,, Malt Jordan, on Ihe third row, frmii left Dexter DUl,.
