PAGE 10—WASHINGTON DAILY NEWS, NOVEMBER 22, 1988 Coastal Boys From Page 6 Lorenzo Jones is facing a re building year this season at the helm of the Eagles. Two lettermen — sophomore Lee Becton and forward Lamont Harris — and no star ters return off last year’s 10-16 team that lost to Havelock in the conference tournament. Becton was the first freshman to play varsity basketball at West Craven and appears to be one starter, but Jones said point guard is a weakness right now. Juniors Craig Coward and Mike Gaskins and sophomore Lamont Cox are battling for the position. Cox was the point guard for the junior varsity team while Coward and Gaskins were two of the top prospects. Tony Jenkins, a 6-3 junior for ward, will be looked to for lead ership and Jermaine Chapma^ a 6-3 sophomore, will also see playing time at either forward or center. West Craven has already lost three players due to academic ineligibility and has just nine on its roster, so depth will be a problem early. Jones said he would pick up a couple of junior varsity players later in the season. Offensively, the Eagles will run when the situation presents itself. Otherwise, a deliberate offense with a good shot selec tion is the key, he said. D.H. CONLEY Pitt County coaching legend Cobby Deans left North Pitt af ter 24 years, a state runnerup team in 1977 and three Coach of The Year awards in the Eastern Plains Class 2-A Conference. Now Deans is the head boys’ basketball coach at D.H. Conley High School, and the way he tells it, the defending regular- season champions of the Coas tal Conference are in a rebuild ing stage this year. season are senior Ashley Brooks, junior Steven Carter, who could see time at point guard after moving up from the jayvee team, and freshman Wil liam Kenon, a 6-4 center. Williams and Merritt averaged approximately eight points each while Thomp son saw limited time. Juniors Martin Patrick, Anthony Artis and Martin Pat rick are expected to help make West Craven Eagles up for the loss of Phil Medlin, who boasted a 16-points-per- game scoring average and was an intimidating force in the mid dle. Medlin is now at Wake Forest University. Expected to contribute after moving up from the junior varsi ty team are 5-4 Jason Wing, 6-3 Remarto Rogers and 6-1 Junior Farrow. Deans, who replaced Walt Claybrook as head coach (Claybrook resigned to become athletic director), said the Vik ings would run the break when possible and work for the team shots.
