BISHOP PENICK SPEAKS AT OPENING CHAPEL
SERVICE
Bishop Penick’s welcome to the faculty and students
Thursday morning was an inspiration to us all.
Through an analogy taken from the story of Gideon
and the Mideonites, in which he compared Saint Mary’s
students with Gideon’s selected band, he discussed the
students possibilities both educational and spiritual, and
showed how character building was a process of day to
day living.
DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS
For several years Mrs. Cruikshank has been working
on a plan to give all Saint Mary’s girls, whether tal
ented or not, an opportunity to take one or more of the
fine arts. This year every girl has this opportunity for
instruction without extra charge.
In rnusic our instructors are; Mr. Jones, Miss Stew
art, Miss Haig, and Miss Scott. A new , building has
been erected. In every way it looks--ns though the
music lovers are going to get the best training possible,
and by the increased enrollment in this course it is
quite evident that many are interested.
Art is still handled ably and well by Miss Harris al
though her classes are nearly tripled in size.
This year. Miss Brooke Allen is assisting Miss Davis
in expression. With Miss Allen’s help and the added
talent the new plan affords, we are confident Miss Davis
will produce more notable plays than ever before.
We are very appreciative of these opportunities that
Saint Mary’s is offering us, for we shall derive both
benefit and pleasure from taking advantage of them.
CONTRIBUTIONS FOB THE “BELLES”
The staff of the “Belles” is going to do its best this
year to cover all news that will interest you, but there
Will be many opportunities for free lance contributions,
borne of you have a gift for discovering news before
anyone else. Some of you are talented writers and
poets. Some of you know a good joke.
A box marked “Contributions for the 'Belles’ ” will
be placed on the bottom floor of Smedes near the Little
btore. Show your interest in school activities by drop
ping into that box: Campus tidbits like the funny remark
in gym yesterday, a sketch of your roommate, your
opinion of organizations and activities, or a review of
he outstanding work done in Music, English or any
0 her department of the school; your particular literary
0 orts such as a poem on the moon last night; a
Write-Up of the talk you had with an old Saint Mary’s
Sir , or that joke that applies so well to your next door
neighbor.
Mary Jane Yeatman, editor of the STAGE COACH
as called a meeting of all new girls interested in be-
of tbis staff. Tbe present staff is com-
f u ot ten old girls who are permanent members only
as long as they continue to do the work assigned to them
to the best of their ability. There are three publica
tions, the STAGE COACH, the Bulletin, and the
Belles, to be edited by one staff, and there is too much
work to be done to allow a slacker to hold a place that
could be filled by a capable and industrious worker.
If you are really interested in becoming a staff mem
ber, show us your talent by contributing to the Belles,
and by writing a good paper for Mary Jane. Be sure
to sign your name to your contributions.
OLD GIRL-NEW GIRL PARTY
When Tudie Heff announced in assembly the other
morning that the Old Girl-Hew Girl Party was to be
on Saturday night, all the new girls started whispering:
“What is it like? Do you have fun? What kind of
a party is it?”
When Saturday night rolled around, all the new girls
were in a dither trying to find out what old girls were
going to take them, and what their names were. The
old girls in turn were hoping that their dates would be
“cute,” and were wandering around trying to find the
girl whom they were supposed to escort.
Finally at eight o’clock all the girls, both old and
new, trooped into Smedes Hall, and waited their turn
to go down the receiving line. The old girls were appre
hensive about remembering the names of the new fac
ulty members, but everyone was correctly introduced.
After the girls had gone through the line, everyone
began to dance, and almost everyone did the “Big
Apple.”
While ice cream was being served, Ann Shook recited.
After that Betty Cleavenger sang and several of the
better dance couples performed.
General dancing was soon resumed, and after a good
time it was with great regret that the last couple left
the parlor. The acquaintance party was a success!
