The Rt. Rev. Edwin A. Penick,

part of the life at Saint Mary’s of
every old girl, and will soon mean
as much to the new girls who are
not yet so familiar with its tradi

In closing. Bishop Penick ex

'’main BUILDING AND DORMS
.HAVE FACES LIFTED
New Girls Arrive Socially
“What are you gonna’ wear? . . .
It’s formal, you know I . . . Has any
body got any long black gloves ? . . .
Hey, look I , Is my hair all right
Really?” Yes! Preparations for
our first big party, the New Girl-
Old Girl Reception, held Saturday
night, September 22, in the parlor.
Getting ready was quite an impor
tant and exciting part of the eve
ning, what with last - minute
“touches” before our “big sisters”
came for us; tripping expectantly
down the hall, only to find the stairs
jammed with others, in a line that
looked positively endless; then pa
tiently waiting our turn in that un
ending parade.
At last we reached the parlor
door. Kathryn Fulton was there to
meet us. Behind her the receiving
line was quite long, and there were
many there whom we did not know.
But our “big sisters” were right on
hand, as usual, to introduce us to
those with whom we were not ac
quainted. Then we found, or rather,
looked for, a place to sit. All the
sofas and chairs had long been occu
pied, so we had to make ourselves
happy on the floor. The loud splash
es of rose, blue, and yellow on a back
ground of black and white and lime
formed a patch-work quilt which
must have been the fanciest the par
lor floor has ever worn.
AVhen the giggling was finally
hushed, and rustling skirts had been
settled, Mildred Chappell “emceed”
a program of entertainment. And
what talent! We didn’t know such
really good entertainers were in our
midst.
Mildred first introduced to us
Nancy Hannah, who sang, very
beautifully. My Hero.
Second on the program was Gin-
ger Werlein, playing the piano.
Claiv de lAine is one of our favor
ites, and, judging from the way
Ginger played it, it must bo one of
hers, too.
A ext were Danny Boy and ThinJc
On Me, sung by Leah AVhitley. We
enjoyed her singing, which particu
larly impressed us.
Mary Billings gave a fine piano
rendition of a Brahms’ Rhapsody.
Then we were very pleasantly sur
prised to find that we had Katherine
Hepburn on our program. We had
many other well-known movie and
radio stars, too, among them Betty
Hutton, Judy Garland, Shirley

A new hall system has been put
into effect for the first time this
year to promote a better and more
thorough student government. It
differs from the old one in that
the students themselves will be
more responsible for the manage
ment of the halls than in the past.
Two seniors have been appointed
to each hall, one to serve as presi
dent for one semester, the other
to serve as vice-president, and
during the second semester the.y
alternate. The presidents and
vice-presidents will be members
of the Hall Council, of which Pon-
cie Dawson is chairman.
The seniors in charge of each
hall are: Kathryn Pulton, first
fioor AYest Rock; Poncie Dawson
second fioor West Rock; Dabney
Little, president, and Dolly Red-
wine, vice-president, second floor
Smedes; Sally Ann Elliott, presi
dent, and Emma Katie Guion,
vice-president, third floor Smedes;
Jane Campbell, president, and
Sally Lee, vice-president, second
floor East Wing; Mary Pinckney
president, and Mary Billings, vice-
president, third floor East AVing;
Lib Price Hines, president, and
Lib Clinard, vice-president, first
floor AYest AVing; Helen Mardre
president, and Susan Ashburn’
vice-president, second floor West
AVing; Harriett Gurley, president
and Mary Helen James, vice-presi
