The Belles of Saint Mary’s April 20, 1951 Order Of Circle Initiates Five New Members During Midnight Walk Elects New Marshals For Commencenwnt And Next Year Dalton, Perry, Hammon, Daw son, Oettinger Receive Honor CAMPUS NOTES The Circle, Saint Mary’s honor society, walked for the third time this year Monday, April 9. Five new members were initiated. They are Sally Dalton, Evelyn Oettinger, Mary Gage Hammond, Nancy Daw son, and Lois Perry. Sally Dalton, of Charlotte, is pres ident of the sophomore class, secre tary-treasurer of the MWCA, a mem ber of the BELLES staff, the Stage Coach staff, and the Beacon. She is a Sigma. Evelyn Oettinger, of Kinston, is chairman of assembly, president of the'Sigmas, business manager of the BELLES, a member of the Hall Council, Letter Club, Canterbury Club, Athletic Council, and Dra matic Club. Mary Gage Hammond, of Green ville, South Carolina, is a member of the Canterbury Club and the Altar Guild. She is on the Honor Council for next year and is a Mu. Nancy Dawson, of Elizabeth City, is vice-president of the junior class, vice-president of the Student Gov ernment for 1951-52, head cheer leader for the Sigma’s, and a mem ber of the Canterbury Club and the Dramatic Club. Patricia George, ’49 H.S., was recently elected president of the Uni versity of North Carolina’s chapter of the Delta Delta Delta sorority for next year. She is secretary of the sophomore class and last year was social chairman of the freshman class. Pat is a resident of Chapel Hill. Saint Mary’s present junior class has elected xinn Patterson as next year’s president of the class. Ann is from Edenton, North Cai- olina, and has been at Sahrt Mary s three years. She is active m the Canterbury Club, Altar Guild, Dra matic Club, Orchesis, and is on both the BELLES and Stage Coach staffs. She is the current junior class secretary and is a btgma. Susan Shepherd Js from \ Saint Mary’s Beacon Taps Six New Members The Beacon, Saint Mary’s high school honor organization, tapped six new members Wednesday, March 21. Tlie,organization held its initia tion ceremony and party in the Hut after supper on that same date. The girls selected for membership at that time were Vicki Stedman, Laura Matheson, Jean Summers, Mary Michal, Catherine Morrison, and Jean Summerlin. Memhershi]) in the Beacon is one of th'e highest honors that can come to an underclassman at Saint Ma- Jo Cooper, ’49 H.S., has achieved the distinction of becoming a Junior Durant Scholar at Wellesley. This honor is awarded only to a relatively small number of juniors and seniors who stand at the very top of their classes. EvGlyn Aleiizies won a rating of excellent in the State High School Music Contest held in Greensboro April 11. She won the right to enter the finals by winning a rating of superior in the district contest at Meredith College earlier this month. Evelyn was one of twenty-two pian ists chosen to play from a larger group of over 200, chosen from all sections of the state. She plans to enter Converse College as a music major in the fall. She is from Hick ory and is a student of Donald Beery. Saint Mary’s library has received nine new books through membership in the Heritage Club. The Heritage Club specializes in printing classics of all languages. All the books are decorated by leading illustrators with illustrations, type, and paper espe cially selected to go with the_ text. The library joined the club in an attempt to arouse interest in the finer editions. The books already received are Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, Wuthering HeighIs, by E m 11 y Bronte, Stevenson’s Kidnapped, Goethe’s Faust, Hawthorne’s House of the Seven Gahles, Old Goriot, by Hoiiore De Balzac, Crainquebille, by Anatole France, Madame Bovary, by Flaubert, and The Way of All Flesh, by Samuel Butler.
