Recent SMS Elections Reveal

In recent elections the St. Mary’s
student body elected Pat McQueen
editor of the Stage Coach, and Vir
ginia Lilly secretary of the Hall
Council for 1954-’55. The day stu
dents chose Betty Martin as their

Conducts Service
The Reverend Dr. William Lea,

The topic of Dr. Lea’s talk was

Five New Members
The Beacon tapped five new mem
bers, Doris Alin Sherrill, Jane Brad
ford, Alma Skinner, Sydney Stuart,
and Betsy Duke, just before sjiring
vacation.' These girls were cliosen
for their active participation in
underclassman and student govern
ment functions.
Doris Ann, from Statesville, is a
member of the Dramatic Club and
the YWCA. She is a Sigma.
Jane, from ilarioii, is vice-presi-
d’ent of the sophomore class, a mem
ber of the Stage Coach staff and
YWCA, and is a J/u.
Alma, from Kinston, is the Honor
Council reiiresentative from the
freshman and sophomore classes, a
member of the Canterbury Club and
the Altar Guild, and is a Mu.
Sydney Stuart, of Belmont, is
treasurer of the Sophomore Class, a
member of Orchesis and YWCA,
and is a Sigma.
Betsy, from Greensboro, is the
only freshman in the Beacon. She
is president of the Freshman Class,
a member of the Canterbury Club,
Dramatic Club, Glee Club, BELLES
staff, and is a Mu cheerleader.

Elects New School Marshals

Take Top Positions
St. Alary’s student body recently
elected six marshals and the chief
dance marshal to serve next year.
Chief dance marshal is Kathy Whit
field. Kitty Campen will serve as
chief marshal. Assisting Kitty will
be Penn Anthony, Alary Ruth Di
vine, Aubrey Campbell, Alarie Ty
ler, and Kathy Whitfield.
Kitty Campen’s home is Edenton.
She is a member of the YWCA,
Altar Guild, BELLES staff, and
the Alay Court, and is a dance mar
shal. She is a Sigma.
Penn Anthony, from Hartsville,
S. C., is a member of the BELLES
staff. Stage Coach staff, A"WCA,
Sigma Pi Alpha, and the Alay
Court. Penn is a Sigma,
Kathy Whitfield, of Kinston, is a
member of the YWCA, Dramatic
Club, Orchesiti, and is a dance mar
shal. Kathy is a Sigma.
Aubrey Campbell, of Lynchburg,
Va., is a Sigma, cheerleader and is
a member of the Dramatics Club,
BELLES staff, and Ihilletin staff.
Alary Ruth Divine, of Rocky
Alount, is a Mu cheerleader and is
a member of the Dramatic Club,
Canterbury Club, and YDC.
Alarie Tyler, another Rocky
Alount lass, is a member of the Alay

Coach, a member of the Canterbury
Club and YDC. She is a Mu.

Presents Concert
The Raleigh Civic Alusic .Associ
ation presented Alme. Gina Bach
auer, pianist, in a concert at Alemo-
rial Auditorium on AVednesday,
April 7. Alme. Bachauer is a
Greek pianist who has toured in
Europe and Egypt. She gave her
first American recital in Xew
A’^ork’s Town Hall in October, 1950.
Alme. Bachauer studied music at
the Athens Conservatory, in Paris,
and with Serge Rachmaninoff.
The first portion of the program
consisted of A^ivaldi’s Concerto in
D Minor. The second selection con
sisted of three sonatas by Scarlotti.
Xext was Beethoven’s Sonata in A
Major, Opus 101. Barcarolle in F
Sharp Major, Opus 60 and Polo
naise in F Sharp Minor, Opus 44,
both by Chopin, followed. Debussy’s
“Prelude Sarabande” and “Tocata”
from Suite Four le Piano concluded
the program.
Alme. Bachauer charmed her au
dience with her delightful renditions
of the Chopin and Debussy jiieces.

Clean-Up Drive
The members of the Beacon are
sjionsoring a clean-up canqfaign
which will last until the end of the
2)resent year. The chief purpose of
this campaign is to beautify the
school cami)us. J’he organization
has distributed signs around the
campus reminding students to keep
off the grass and to stay on the
walkways. The members themselves
are acting as reminders when stu
dents are seen cutting across the
lawns.
The Beacon is a high school
honorary organization whose pur
pose is to promote school spirit,
more student co-operation, and more
pai’t-icipation in extra-curricular ac
tivities. The officers of the Beacon
for the present year are Barbara
Hunt, ju’esident, and Debbie Con
ner, secretary and treasurer. Bar
bara has asked that all students give
the Beacon their full co-ojieration
during this campaign.
