Dr. Baillie 1959 MAY COURT
Visits Campus
St. Mary’s girls have been very
lionored by the visit of Dr. John
Baillie to the campus on Monday
and Tuesday of this week. He came
to us from Great Britain on a tour
®f the United States with his wife.
This is not his first visit, how
ever, for Dr. Baillie has been in
this country often before and has
even taught here. In his homeland
lie holds several notable positions
as Well as international ones. He is
Principal of New College Edin-
^'prgli and Dean of Faculty of Di-
vinity at Edinburgh University.
Recently he has become one of the
Presidents of the World Council of
Churches, and he is Chaplain to the
Queen of England.
Dr. Baillie gave four lectures to
the student body, all four of which
Were centered around the topic,
I^'hat it means to be a Christian.”

vate Prayer, which many at school
have read, he “Captivates” his
readers as he did his audience while
speaking.
Beacon
Adds Members
Cn December 9,1958, the Beacon,
which is St. Mary’s high school
honorary organization, took in
three outstanding members of the
sophomore class. Diane Blanton is
^ Mu and is from Marion, N. C.
Diane is in Glee Club, serves on
the Muse Staff, and is vice-jiresi-
dent of the sophomore class. IMc-
:^^uir^ Currie is from Fayetteville,
C., and is a Mu. McNair al-
so serves on the Mitse Staff. Caro-
lue Finlay is from Columbia S. C.,

Fourteen beautiful girls have
been selected to ^aiuy on the
cherished tradition of the May
Court. These girls come from seve
ral Southern states and have al the
qualities of lovely “southern
ladies.”
Chosen for ^laid of Honor this
year is the pretty brunette Oc-
tavia Phillips. Aside from her beau
ty Oetavia is outstanding _m

cluding being a hall counseloi,

The rest of the May Court is
composed of girls who live in
North Carolina. Two of these love
ly ladies come from Charlotte.
They are the dark-haired Sopho
more, Virginia Anderson, and the
vivacious freshman, Winston Con
ner. The sedate Virginia is on the
Belles staff, in the Granddaughters’
Club. The active Winston is in the
Swimming Club and' in the Letter
Club.
Another striking senior is Jean
nette Gilliam, who comes from Bur
lington Jeannette is a hall counsel

Daughters’ Club.
Sally Bruce, a gay, blue-eyed
senior from Greensboro, is another
of our lovely Court. Sally is a hall
counselor. News Editor of the
Belles, and on the Altar Guild.
Alarjorie Bryan, a dark-eyed
blonde from Goldsboro, is a junior.
She is a Sigma Cheerleader, in the
Y.W.C.A., and the Dramatics Club.
Susan Poe, a sophomore from
Fayetteville, is a striking blonde.
Susan is also a Sigma Cheerleader
and a Dance IMarshal.
Sharon Cates, an ever-laughing
junior, is from Raleigh. Sharon is
in the Dramatics Club.
Polly Fulkerson
Chosen To Lead
Student Government
The next President of the Stu
dent Government at St. Mary’s will
be Polly Fulkerson from Pensacola,
Florida. Polly attended Pensacola
High School where she was a mem
ber of the National Honor Society,
Student Council, and was “Sweet
heart” of Hi Y. She also won a
D.A.R. award for citizenship, and
she was Secretary of her Sopho
more Class, and “School Spirit”.
A^ot only was Polly very active in
high school activities, but she was
also Vice President of her Church
League in Pensacola. At St. Mary’s,
Polly is in the Dramatics Club,
Canterbury Club, Y. D. C., and
she is Secretary of the Junior Class.
Polly skipped her senior year in
high school and came directly to
St. Mai-y’s after completing her
junior year.
The newly elected Vice Presi
dent of the Student Government is
Ann Hauser from Fayetteville,
A^'orth Carolina. At Fayetteville
High School, Ann was on the an
nual staff, newspaper staff, and she
was Treasurer of both her Junior
and Senior Classes. She was also a
member of the National Honor
Society and a Senior Superlative.
At St. Mary’s, Ann is on the Stage
Coach Staff, Belles Staff, and she
is a member of the Dramatics
Club.
Alartha Taylor, from Oxford,
North Carolina, is the newly elect
ed Chairman of Hall Council. At
Oxford High School, Martha was
President of the Student Body, Sec
retary of the Senior Class;- and a
Glass Marshal. She was also Home
coming Queen, a cheerleader, on the
annual staff, and a Senior Superla
tive, “Best All Around”. At St.
Mary’s, Martha is a member of the
Doctor’s Daughters’ Club, Grand
daughters’ Club, and she is on the
Belles Staff.
New Letter Club
Members Announeed
Lucy Milward, President of the
Letter Club, announced the folio-w
ing girls in assembly to be new
members of the Letter Club: Blair
Maddison, senior; Martha Win-
sted, Sophomore; Anne Edens,
senior; Joan Williams, senior; and
Kit McLeod, senior.
Webber Bell
To Lead The
1960 Seniors
The new President of the Senior
Class is Webber Bell from Golds
boro, North Carolina. Webber at
tended Goldsboro High School
where she was President of the Na
tional Honor Society, Secretary of
Student Government, Class Alar-
shall, and a Senior Superlative. She
was also very active in the Gold-
masquers Productions. During the
summer of ’57, Webber was an ex
change student to Germany.
At St. Mary’s, Webber is mem
ber of the Granddaughters’ Club,
Dramatics Club, and Y.R.C.
