ST. MARY’S INCREASES FACULTY
St. Mary’s has acquired eight new
faculty members this year. Also Miss
Margaret Underwood has joined the
staff full-time after being a part-time
golf instructor last year.
Aliss Underwood, a native of
Greensboro, is teaching Art 31 (stu
dio) and golf this year. She attended
Randolph-Macon Woman’s College,
received her B.A. in English from
UNC-CH, and her Master of Fine
Arts (major in painting and minor in
music history) from UNC-Greens-
boro. Miss Llnderwood became a
Registered Medical Technologist at
the Moses H. Cone Hospital School
of Medical Technology and did grad
uate study in microbiology at Bow
man Gray School of Medicine. She
has given seminars and taught med
ical technology students at Bowman
Gray. Her favorite pasttimes are
painting, golf, gardening, camping,
birdwatching, reading, and especially
music.
The Language Department has
three new members: Marjolijn R.
dejager Werman, Caterine Clement,
and Dr. Delores Lado. We were un
able to obtain any information on Dr.
Lado. We were unable to obtain any
information on Dr. Lado, who teaches
Spanish.
Mrs. Werman is from Amsterdam,
the Netherlands, and has had two
years teaching experience in the New
York City public school system. She
received her A.A. from Stephens Col
lege. her B.A. from Hunter College,
her M.A. from UNC-CH, and is in
the process of obtaining her PhD. She
is teaching French 9, French 23,
French 27, and Spanish 21 this year.
Mrs. Werman is married to David
T. Werman, M.D., a psychiatrist at
UNC-CH. They have a son, Marco,
age nine, and a daughter, Claudia,
age eight. She enjoys spending time
with her children, painting, sewing,
and swimming, and hopes ot be able
to make a small contribution to St.
Mary’s in her own way.
Mademoiselle Caterine Clement is
from Armentieres, France. Although
teaching French 7, she is also a stu
dent at St. Mary’s. She received her
degree from the French Institute of
London and has taught a year at St.
Gabriel’s Training College in Lon
don. She enjoys traveling, meeting
and discussing things with other
people, literature, philosophy, and
music.
Mile. Clement wonders why there
is not a place here offering a varied
program of activities to give students
(male and female) a chance to gather
and meet each other. She says, “I
think it would help a great deal the
students to fight the boredom or even
the feeling of homesickness they
sometimes get on the weekends.”
Marlene M. Jeffreys is teaching Al
gebra 3-4 and Math 21-2 at SMJC
this year. She taught algebra at San
derson High School in Raleigh last
year while working on her MAT at
Duke. She attended Baylor Univer
sity and N.C. State. She is from
Houston, Texas, and has three daugh
ters: Suzanne, 15; Linda, 14; and,
Lisa, 12. Whenever she can find the
time, she enjoys playing bridge, wa
ter skiing or swimming, and sewing.
Her new interests are caving and
mountain climbing.
Chan Poyner Pike from Raleigh is
in her first year of teaching voice.
She attended St. Mary’s as a special
student during high school when she
studied voice. Mrs. Pike attended
Southern Methodist University and
received her Bachelor of Music Edu
cation from UNC-CH. Her hobbies
are guitar, folk and pop singing,
swimming, and skiing.
Mr. Demetrios F. Nixon is teach
ing economics and Western Civiliza
tion here. He has taught at Georgia
Military College and Louisburg Col
lege. He attended Central High in
Charlotte, Charlotte College, and re
ceived his B.A. and M.A. from
