What does that mean? Jambo is Swahili for hello, one of the many words I heard during my exciting summer in Kenya, Africa. Last year, I was chosen to represent St. Mary’s in the Experiment in International Living program. I left from Kennedy Airport after a three- day orientation in Massachusetts, where I met the other members of my group. We landed in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, after two exhausting days of travel. The first two and a half weeks of my trip were spent in Nairobi with my Kenyan “family.” I learned about the life of a city family by helping my “mother” with the shopping and spending evenings playing chess with my “father.” ruins, craft shops, and beaches. We then returned to our families in Nairobi, sorry to see our trip end. I encouraged all freshmen to apply for the Experiment program. It was the most valuable experience I have ever had. I feel as if I have grown and learned to appreciate so much more in life. the time was spent travelling ia Switzerland, as well as in Parts of Italy and Germany. Living with a family in another culture is a great way to learn about another way of life. I learned a lot from living and travelling in Switzerland; now I even look at my own way of life differently. When I left Root, I felt as if I were leaving my own home! Questionnaire Recently, The Belles published the following questionnaire for St. Mary’s students to complete. Only a few results were received. If you are interested, please fill it out and place it in The Belles suggestion box in the Student Union. The results of the questionnaire will appear in the next issue. Should the Juke Box be moved to the cafeteria? yes no Comments: Would you patronize the Snack Bar if it stayed open: Afternoon and Evening? yes- no- Afternoon? yes- no- Evening? yes- no- Weekends? yes no- Comments: SWITZERLAND by Nancy Barwick Our group then headed for Kiboko, a small village where we dug irrigation ditches for the village farmers. It was interesting to work with these people, as well as to live like them. Even though I developed sore muscles and dry skin, these two weeks were the best part of my whole trip! We lived in little green huts, sleeping on the floor, cooking our meals on an open fire, and bathing in a river. This summer I spent six weeks in Switzerland as a student ambassador from St. Mary’s in the Experiment in International Living program. For a month I lived with my adopted family in Root, a village outside of Lucerne. The Sarbachs have four children: two boys, ages eighteen and nineteen, and two girls, ages four and ten. The father is a doctor, and his wife helps him in his practice. The whole family made me feel at home; soon I began to feel like a part of the family. It was difficult to communicate at first because only my “parents” could speak English well. But by the end of my stay, my “brothers” and “sisters” had picked up some English. They had me speaking some German as well! CARE Commercial CARE commercial: Let your fingers do the walking, instead of the operator talking. Directory assistance costs money. Last month 287 directory assistance requests were made. At this rate, we would spend $396 this year for needless help when it could be spent in more useful campus things. USE THE PHONE BOOK! Illlllllllllllllllllllillllillll After our hard work, we were ready for a vacation. We travelled to Mombasa and to Lamu, two beautiful islands on Kenya’s east coast. We visited Fort Jesus, Portugese Our group of student ambassadors from all over the country then spent two weeks travelling.
