PAUK I TIIK BKI.U;S FKBRLARY 15, 1982 lEMtnrtal Are You Aware? Don’t you think we go to a great school? St. Mary’s College. We’re in a great location... Hillsborough St. What more could you ask for? We’ve got it all. Beer joints, restaurants, and thousands of guys just down the street. St. Mary’s can boast of several attributes, their largest and most impressive being 500 great girls. We have super teachers, great administrators (especially our good-looking president). We even have a mean Dean (huh. Circle?). We have a nice car, even if we do get tired of lasagna and tator tots. St. Mary’s has a variety of intersting classes to choose from, nice dorms, great dorm moms, understanding dorm counselors, the list could go on and on. However, while St. Mary’s might be the continent we live and breathe in, it’s not our world. How many of us are capable of carrying on an intelligent five minute conversation about Reagan’s plan for a New Federalism? I certainly can’t. How many of us know about the anti abortion marches in Washington in late January? I wouldn’t go so far as to call us uncaring, I would much rather use the word un-aware. By now. I’ve probably got the hairs on the tock of your neck looking like they were starched with Faultless Spray Starch. Stop and think. Have you heard any girls voicing their wish to become more aware? Would you like to become more aware? It might seem hopeless, but where there is a will, there IS a way. Many people can talk intelligently about the Global 2000 report and what it means to us. 1 know Dr. Coffey can, she’s my environmental teacher. Many of us know about the Soviet invasion of the poorer Central American Countries. Many of us know (hat communist countries are less than 1.500 miles away. The question is... What does it ■ mean to us? OK. you’ll say. Who cares about Cuba or Nicaragua. We’ve got enough problems here in the U S. Sure, we do. Look at South Florida. In just ten years, their population has increased from 1,267.000 to 1,745,000. Wow. What are we going to do with all those people? And that’s just not Florida. Just take the time to look at N.C.’s statistics. Sure it’s deserving. Sure it’s sCary. But not thinking about it, or not bothering to become aware of the problem is even more scary. The growing apathy of college ‘students concerning the world situation is. well, overwhelmingly SCARY. Sometimes I’ll sit down and think about my future, which hopefully will include a husband, a child or two, a nice house, and especially a career. But then I’ll read Time MAgazine and read about the growing wave of unemployment in the U.S. Maybe I’ll be one of those unlucky individuals having to depend on a church for my food, college education or not. Even if I do have kids, their problems will be quadrupled. By then, there will be approximately 6.1 billion people on the earth. Where will we fit? How will we fit? I’d certainly like to become more aware of the situation. Wouldn’t you? There is a way. The first step is to turn off the Three’s Company and THINK, FEEL, MOVE. Action is the key word here. The second step is to buy a subscription to a magazine, or newspaper, or stop by the library and read theirs. It's cheaper. We can encourage talks, where students during dinner can sit around a table and DISCUSS. Maybe a teacher could monitor the discussion. We can write letters to our Congressmen, and get involved with what’s going on. Perhaps THE social studies department could offer a current events series- or more could be covered in class. There are many solutions. Let’s get out and move girls. Sure, the world is our oyster, even if it is overpopulated, polluted and thousands of other , things. Let’s become aware. For those of us who are far behind, it might take a while to catch up, but I truly believe it’ll be worth it.
