THE BELLES
SEPTEMBER. 1982
The St. Mary's administration came up
with quite a few brainstorms this
summer while we were lying around
catching the rays, working, studying or
sleeping. Pay phones and new absence
policies are the more questionable ideas.
But, In my opinion, the Interciub Council
was a beauty.
The Interclub Council is In charge of
coordinating St. Mary's Clubs. To be
officially recognized, the clubs must now
have a constitution on file and elected
officers. One of our seniors, Michelle
Pridgen, president of this council, is in
charge of coordinating the clubs so they
don't (for example) have the same fund
raising proiects or the same evening
walk dates.
In a meeting of all club presidents on
August 30, Dean Jones outlined the rriost
Important aspect of this project. Every
club, she announced, or council Is going
to have to make some contribution to the
community. By community. Dr. Jones
means the Raleigh area, not the limited
St. Mary's campus. Several charities
that could use some funding were talked
about. The Shepherds Kitchen, which
feeds people unable to get food, the
Salvation Army, and a center that deals
with abused women were among those
mentioned.
Representatives of The Belles were
present at this meeting. After listening to
Dr. Jones' Ideas, we called a meeting to
discuss what our "contribution" to the
community would be. Quite a bit of
protest was voiced. Since Belle editors
felt that we already make an obvious
contribution to the community, one that
also requires a considerable amount of
time. The Belles, however, will
contribute three items to the community:
its physical self, coverage of needy
charities and the St. Mary's club that
help them out, and most importantly,
profits from advertising. The Belles will
begin advertising. We believe that
advertising will lead to a more organized
paper, help businesses in the area, and
generate enough profit to help a needy
charity. The charity The Belles plans to
give to will be announced in the next
issue.
Undoubtedly, the administration's
baby brainstorm, the Interclub Council,
will prove to be exactly that, a
brainstorm. Not only will clubs with no
obvious duties contribute to the
betterment of the Raleigh area, these
clubs will also help the girls that join
them. The only objection I can perceive
are the publications and Drama Club
being included as "clubs." They already
