On this day, people send flowers, candy and other gifts to their friends and loved ones. These are known as Valentines. Many valentines have humorous pictures and sayings, some have romantic verses — but they all say “Be my Valentine!” Different authorites believe Valentine’s Day started in various ways. Some experts trace Valentine’s Day to an ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalia. Other experts connect Valentine’s Day with the old En glish belief that birds chose their mates on February 14. Still others link it with one or more saints of the early Christian church. Saint Valentine was a name given to two legendary Christian martyrs whose feasts were formerly observed on February 14. According to one story, the Roman Em peror Claudius II in the A.D. 200’s forbade young men to marry. He felt that the single men made better soldiers. A priest named Valentine disobeyed the emperor and sec retly married young couples. Another story says Valentine was a saint who made friends with children. The Romans impris oned him because he refused to worship their Gods. The children missed Saint Val entine and tossed loving notes between the bars of his cell window. This story may ex plain why we send messages on Valen tine’s Day. Valentine’s Day probably came from a combination of all three sources — plus the belief that spring is a time for lovers! I’d send my brothers and sister chocolates and my mother and Nana would get roses. I’d give my daddy a big kiss. Alisa Evans I would give my boyfriend a rose, but not a red one, a lavender one. Pat Gillam I would give my best friend a heart charm With “best friend” inscribed. Ashley Langley I would give my boyfriend all my love. Natalie Southworth I’m giving my new honey two tickets to the Fantasticks, an off-broadway musical, assuming I’ll be using one of them! Meade Horton Last year I gave my boyfriend a gold pinky ring and had I Love You inscribed inside the ring. Cherie Johnson We would give Anna Liese driving les sons, to Tina we would give Wendell, to Gina a one way ticket to see Carson, and to our parents our love. Fred Becker and Lizzie Bull On Valentine’s Day, I probably won’t give flowers or send assorted candies to the ones I love.
