A Word From the President
President Jenkins Addresses Students
A S Saint Mary's begins her 153rd academic year, let me welcome back
returning students and tell our new students how glad we are to have
you here at this very special place. We think your foremost purpose here is
to prepare yourself well for further education. There are ample resources at
Saint Mary’s to help you develop your academic potential. One of the
benefits of a women's institution is that the supportive environment
encourages you to expand your intellectual horizons beyond what you once
imagined you could do. We all hope that happens for you this year; and if
you take advantage of the opportunities, it will.
The Saint Mary's experience also encompasses much more than the
classroom. From living within and under the Honor Code you learn the
meaning of personal integrity. You leam that your wo-d should be your
bond. From participating in the many activities that are available for you,
you learn important leadership skills that you will use long after you
graduate. Among the other students here you will find friends who will be
your friends for life. From some of our traditions you leam the value of
ideas that are passed down from generation to generation. And in quiet
*noments in the chapel, you will come to know the spiritual dimension of
To be candid, you are fortunate to be here amidst all these opportuniues
for intellectual and personal growth. We may be a small college, but there
are many ways you can take part in campus activities. My hope tor you this
year is that you take full advantage of the chances you have to follow your
interests or develop some new skill. It is true ths you only get out of
something what you put into it. You will have a great year if you participate
^d get involved in the life of Saint Mary’s. The Saint Mary’s experience
^ill v/ork for you if you work for it.
I look forward to seeing you participating in the many facets of our

^aint Mary’s Orientation ran from
Thursday, August 18 to
Wednesday, August 24. Orientation
is designed to provide students, new
and old, with pertinent information
about the impending academic term.
Because it spanned nearly a week
this year. Orientation allowed new
students the opportunity to adjust to
the campus before classes began.
Also, many activities were planned
to help students get to know one
This is the first time in recent
history that Saint Mary's has
enrolled a full high school.
Therefore, there was a special
session of Orientation for the ninth
and tenth graders on Friday, August
19. This session was in the evening,
and dinner was served. The Day
Student Officers and the Day
Assistants were present, as was the
Day Student Coordinator and
members of the faculty and staff.
The SGA and RA's arrived at
Saint Mary’s on Thursday,
August 18, to assist with
Orientation. They, along with the
RAs and DAs, met with the Dean of
Saturday, August 20, the new
boarding students arrived. The
SGA, RA's, and the Residence Life
Staff helped them move into their
dorms. There were hall meetings
Sunday and Monday were days set
aside to help the new students
acclimate themselves to the Saint
Mary's campus and the city of
Raleigh. Some of the activities
included a skit night and a
scavenger hunt. There was also
plenty of time for students to relax
and decorate their rooms. New Day
Students were strongly encouraged
to attend all of the scheduled events.
Tuesday, August 23, the returning
students arrived. They went through
the Orientation process, and classes
would commence the following day.
On the first day of a student's
arrival, she went to Smedes Parlor.
There, she checked in with the
Nurse, got her student identification
and campus directory picture taken,
and picked up her class registration
card, among other things. It was
extremely important that all students
were present during the designated
