Orientation 1994 By Harper Best Editor ^aint Mary’s Orientation ran from Thursday, August 18 to Wednesday, August 24. Orientation is designed to provide students, new and old, with pertinent information about the impending academic term. Because it spanned nearly a week this year. Orientation allowed new students the opportunity to adjust to the campus before classes began. Also, many activities were planned to help students get to know one another. This is the first time in recent history that Saint Mary's has enrolled a full high school. Therefore, there was a special session of Orientation for the ninth and tenth graders on Friday, August 19. This session was in the evening, and dinner was served. The Day Student Officers and the Day Assistants were present, as was the Day Student Coordinator and members of the faculty and staff. The SGA and RA's arrived at Saint Mary’s on Thursday, August 18, to assist with Orientation. They, along with the RAs and DAs, met with the Dean of Students. Saturday, August 20, the new boarding students arrived. The SGA, RA's, and the Residence Life Staff helped them move into their dorms. There were hall meetings that evening. Sunday and Monday were days set aside to help the new students acclimate themselves to the Saint Mary's campus and the city of Raleigh. Some of the activities included a skit night and a scavenger hunt. There was also plenty of time for students to relax and decorate their rooms. New Day Students were strongly encouraged to attend all of the scheduled events. Tuesday, August 23, the returning students arrived. They went through the Orientation process, and classes would commence the following day. On the first day of a student's arrival, she went to Smedes Parlor. There, she checked in with the Nurse, got her student identification and campus directory picture taken, and picked up her class registration card, among other things. It was extremely important that all students were present during the designated times. Students enjoy getting acquainted during Orientation.
