Wes ter. respondents in the country churches was highly gratifying. Mr. Alderman received some excellent letters, sever al of which appear in this issue. We want a monthly letter from each church in the Union. Our corres- IHJndents will not forget this. An oc casional letter, from the pastors would be greatly appreciated. We are much pleased at the way in which the business department of the paper is being conducted. We have the right men for business managers. A num ber of our members have already handed in their subscriptions. The rest will do so as soon as convenient. Our Tlianksgiving collection for the OiTlmnage amounted to about $50. This was good considering the size of the congregation. Let those who were'not present at the service con tribute enough to make the sum $75. Hand your contribution to Bro. John AI. Huglies. Hereafter the amounts given through the envelopes will be sufficient for all the benevolent ob jects. The Orphanage money - was due whei/ the '..i:; 'a?.gun. A number of persons Irave commended the enterprise in a way that is very encouraging to the edi tors. The first response fronii our cor- The money pledged ‘ last year for State Missions has not yet been paid, and in consequence the salaries of two of the missionaries in the Tar River have been reduced, $50 each. We must raise at least $100 that tliese amonuts -may be restored. One hundred dollars will practically re deem our pledge, since the ladies have already i>aid about $40 toward this fund. It is unfortunate that this collection was overlooked. It will not be difficult, however, for us to raise the amount, and then aU of our obligations will have been met, and no more special collections need be taken. Returirs from our Duplex Envelopes continue to be gratifying. Many have sent in their envelopes regular ly from the first Sunday in October. Some have not yet acquired the habit, but they wUl do so soon we are sure. It is much easier for you to bring your envelope to church every Sun day than it is for some to go to you even once a month to collect. Such collecting is a hardship that we have no right to impose on any one. We have no collectors now, so it is im portant that you do not forget. Please notice that there is an envelope dated for each Sunday in the year. Some have gone a year ahead of the cal endar, and have brought in envelopes dated September, 1911. This is bor rowing trouble—for the secretary. How .much shall we pay during the present year to the various benevo lent objects? The pastor and deacon: were appointed a committee to recom mend an amount and an apportion ment of the same. They recommended $500, to be apportioned among the boards in the same ratio that the state funds are distributed. Five hundred dollars to all the boards is less than the church has been giv ing. Last year about $800 were con tributed to all mission objects. In making this chanf^^he, committee does not feel that we would be tak ing a backward step. Under the new system more money will be raised than formerly. It is simply a change in emphasis, that is recom mended. There is a very gen?ral feeling among our members that the church has been giving more to missions aboard than is just to our cause at home, and hence to the cause at large—that “we have been lengthening our cords without strengthening our stakes.” King Solomon was right when he said, “There is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.” We are right also when we add,— “There is that GIVETH more than is meat, but it tendeth to poverty.” It is probable that the early disci ples in Jerusalem who gave all their possessions to the poor were after ward numbered amopg those who had to be supported by coutributioixs from the gentile Christians. The Baraca Class in our church at North Henderson is doing excel lent work under the leadership of Bro. N. D. Wells. The class gave an oyster supper on the first Tuesday night in December. About twenty- five members of the class were pres ent, and a few specially invited guests. Several of the brethren made interesting addresses.. The class prom ises to be a great factor for good in the church and community. Bro. T. M. Pittman is doing a fine work in the school at South Hender son. He has about fifty men en rolled in his class.
