BTT THE PASTOR. f We greatly sympathize with our - ^ Bro. Abbott who recently joined us. •$ in the loss he sustained byn ason of the fire. t . V, A certain brother’s dog came home with a chicken in his mouth- smart dog was he—Conference was at hand. In our last issue we recommended that onr Sunday School take imme diate steps to organize a mission school in East Winston. What has been done obout it? If there is any special time to get nearer to God, it is when disappoint ment and trials encompass us. We most need the light of God’s coun tenance when darkness threatens us. The good work of the “Pastors visiting Circle” is being seen even now. If you could have been at the pastil’s study last Friday after-; noon, you would have gone away expecting great things from the work. Help these ladies out. Since our last issue the pastor has spent ten days laboring with the good brethren and sisters at Mt. Airy. He preached day and night and as a result of his labors and the faithful work of the good pas tor, Rev. L. R. Pruett and his faithful flock the Lord, we trust converted fifty or sixty souls. We anticipate great pleasure and profit from our State convention at Raleigh beginning the 8th. It is thouglit that the attendance will greatly exceed that of any previous year, and there are several matters to come before it which will stimulate the interest. Let every Baptist go who can, and have a good time, and better yet, learn more about what your denomination is doing. “Athletic fakerism” is the latest from Rev. Tom Dixon, Jr. It is a very prevalent disease in Win ston. We’ve seen the disorder in many of its forms in our city, and we have tried to prescribe for it but we have not known what to call it, but we are all right now and shall go for it with “gloves off’ in the future. Look it up brethren and sisters and see if you are not affected slightly. We are afraid that but little effort is being made to secure subscribers to tne “Worker.” This is not as it should be. We know that we have an exceptionally good paper for the money, and believe that with a little personal efiort on the part of the members of our church and Sunday School, it would be self-sustaining and greatly improved. Take vour copy of thiif issue, and see i/ you cannot do something in this direction. Our Thanksgiving service was well attended and an interesting program was rendered. The Sun day School children were presented with confectioneries and then a good collection for tne poor was taken. Last Sunday the pastor was in North Danville Va., and preached morning and evening for the Baptist church. He enjoyed the visit very much. Large crowds were present at both services. Quite a number were turned away from the evening service. The Baptists there are pro gressive in their ideas ot Christian work. And when they take hold o*' a thing they never turn loose. “We know that we have passed from Death unto Life because we love the brethren.” Have you got this evidence? If not you had better get at work and clean out the dark corners of your heart. Brush out the cobwebs, sweep behind the doors clean out all malice and euvy and leave the doors open for the sun light of brotherly love to enter. We are fast approaching the end of the year, the time when most people take a review of their lives and makes new reselves for the coming year. It is all right to have a review and begin better, but once a year is not often enough. Have a review every night brother. It is very poor business policy to let ac counts run too long. In the first place many items are overlooked and lost sight of, and then you are likely at any time to be called on for a settlement, and your books are not ready. Balance your books and see how you stand every night. The pulse of Broad Street church is not as strong as the pastor would like to .see it. The prayer meetings should be better attended. We note that on inclement nights the sisters attend better than brethren. If un pleasant weather is to be an excuse tor non-attendance (which it is not) the brethren have less excuse than the sisters. The greatest blessings we find in God’s service are those that come when we make a sacrifice of some comfort, ease or pleasure. Come out brethren to our prayer meetings. A dirty, unkept, down at the heel, ill clad, street corner loafer is an universal object of contempt, and we are never at a loss for words of condemnation for a character of this kind. How about the Church loafer^? The church loafer is to our mind equally despisable. He does no work for the Lord but stands in the sunshine of God’s house, in the way of those about God’s business. He is spiritually unkempt and dirty, inasmuch as his daily life is such that the smirch and stain of the world is upon him, and he does not seem to know it. He is down at the heel in mans way, and altogether a most undesirable character to have around. There is no room in Broad Street for the Church loafer. SOATEEED-OOLLEOTED. Two simple words containing the same number of letters, and very similar in general appearance, but oh how different in meaning. Apply them to the word, energies-scattered energies. A little work for God much more for selfish' self, a little frivolous amusement, a little gossip ping, visiting all mixed with sin and the resullt is Death. Collected energies, all used for God’s work-result in Life eternal. PEOTEOT THE SABBATH- If there is one thing more than another which is calculated to weak en our faith in American civilization it i.s the fact that in America we are losing our icspect for the Sabbath, the sacred in-stituthin of the Bible and our fatliers. It has been bad enough when lb • violation of this one of God’.s most s-icred laws was confined to mere localities, but now since, as a nation we plunge reck- les.sly into a violation of 'this law it beooine.s indeed a matter of great concern. If ever there was a people whose every effort should be to de fend every principle laid down by God’s word, this people ought to be our own dear people of America, and yet as a people we ai e soon to engage legally in a wholesale viola tion of one of God’s most cherished commandments. We are surprised at our lady managers of the \V orld’s Fair for allowing themselves to be duped by a set of reckless men to the extent that they are willing to give their consent to this crying shame upon our civslization. In different parts of our country, so cieties for the protection of the Sab bath have been organized and we are glad to see this step. Let the movemement be National and through it the church shows its hand. KIOKEES AND KIOKING. There are a few people who seem to have a constitutional predisposi tion to show their close relationship to that curious animal known in common language as the “mule.” It is a pity Mr, Darius did not carry on his evolution process to a higher degree in some folks. But without some pests our tempers would not be tried. But is it not a pity that some good intentions have to be spoiled by the whims of some “kick ers?” I heard a man the other day boasting over the fact that he was a Baptist and he was led by the ma jority, and yet to my certuin knowl edge he followed backwards, with his heels the most conspicuous part about him. My advice to the Bro. was either to stop boasting over “fol lowing the majority,” or keep his heels on the ground. Are you a Baptist, if so kick before a question is decided and then pull the tacks out of your shoe heels and walk with the brethren. A-QHESTIOH. 1. Wh-.tdo "you think of a person who is a member of the church and then is so absorbed in the things of the world that he will leave his church meeting to attend to them and allow his church to suffer for his pres ence and council? 2. What do you think of a person who is a member of the church and let who is so much more concerned about the way she looks than the way she acts, that will dress so uncomfort ably that she can’t get down to pray or straighten up to sing? The answer to these questions would tell the se crets of thinly attended church Con ference. And some poor church music in some churches we have visited. BAITY’S CHRISTMAS. Christmas comes this year on Sun day and in all of our churches for once this day will bo celebrated as it ought to be. At Broad street chuich Sunday morning the pastor will preach a special sermon on Guiding Star.” And at night “The Nature cf God.” Let us work up a good crowd. ■ Bee Hive, We offer for the next sixty days our line of fine Shoes for ladies ^and gentlemen At Greatly ReducedlPrices.
