THE CONFLICT PAGE THREE Arkansas Convention Makes Stand Against Evoiiition in School in nature as the transmutation of species, or the evolution of life from one species to an other, or that man came from jthe anthropoid ape, or any low er form of animal life, or that I ' iman is derived from a comm.on (continued from page one) | ancestor with Other so-called mittee,” but those Arkansas Baptists are not of the side stepping sort! If the Baptists and ■ Methodists and Disciples (we can count on the Presby terians already) in every State will take the open, firm stand taken by these Arkansas Bap tists, we will drive Evolution out of our tax-supported schools within five years. Some Evolutionist Univer sity or College President or Professor may sneer and say that these Arkansas Baptists dc not understand Evolution, w^ere not competent to pass such res olutions. If any one of them who thinks this will get the en dorsement of Columbia Univer sity or of Chicago University or of any other reputable Uni versity that is committed to the teaching of ^Evolution, as the representation of Evolution teaching, the columns of The Conflict are open for a debate with Allen Hill Autrey, for three years President of the Arkansas Baptist State Con vention on “Shall Evolution teachers be excluded from tax- supported schools?” or on “Is Evolution a Science?” or on “Is the teaching of Evolution, that man evolved from the lower animal, true?” The Con flict will agree to have the de bate published in cheap book form for broadcast distribu tion. Here are the Arkansas res olutions. Why should not similar resolutions be adopted by the Baptists, Disciples, Methodists and others of every State? ANTI-EVOLUTION RESOLU TION. (Adopted by Arkansas Con vention) Believing that the time has come for Arkansas Baptists to declare their position on Evo lution and Modernism, the fol lowing resolutions are offered; Be it resolved, first, that: We believe that the Bible IS God’s revelation to man; that it does not only contain God’s Word but that it is really and actually God’s revelation of Himself to man. We believe it is divinely inspired, being written by men moved by the Holy Spirit. We accept un reservedly and unqualifiedly the Genesis account of creation as both accurate and true, and that the language here used is “neither allegorical nor figura tive, nor hypothetical, nor in ferential,” but gives the plain, simple, account of God’s crea tive' act. We believe the mira cles recorded in the Bible w^ere actually performed as they are recorded. We believe Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary through the powder of the Holy Spirit, and that He is very God; that His death was! vicarious; His resurrection' bodily, and His return will be; personal. Be it resolved, second, that: | We do not believe in Darwin-1 ian evolution, materialistic or i atheistic or theistic, or any other theory of evolution by S W'hatever name called which j proposes to teach that therei is, or has been, such a thing * i primates. We believe that man is the direct creation of God i and not the product of some ; form of evolved life. Be it resolved third that: We believe that the greatest menace to truth and spiritual religion are rationalism, des tructive criticism and the sub stitution of culture and social service for personal regenera tion through the operation of the Holy Spirit; that these teachings are contrary to God’s Word, discredit the teachings of Jesus, deny His deity, and are destructive to the founda tions of Christianity and civili zation. Be it resolved fourth that: This convention go on record as endorsing these doctrinal statements. Be it resolved fifth that: This convention require each and every one, president and faculty and all employes of our boards, who hold position with our educational institutions or boards to sign one of these doctrinal statements. Let the reader re-read those resolutions. They are simple, plain, com prehensive. Why should not these resolutions be adopted by the Baptist State Conventions of North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and other States that have not gone on record? No clearer statements of what Baptists., CongY^lgutionalists, j Disciples, Episcopalions, Luth erans, Methodists, Presbyteri ans and other Evangelicals pro fess to believe will ever be made. Are leaders of these people so narrow and little that they are afraid to adopt res olutions that express their be liefs, simply because the resolu tions originated in Arkansas? They passed ringing resolutions concerning the world war; this is a war where there is far more at stake. Let the truth be told: the only reason why these resolu tions cannot be passed by every Evangelical body in America is that some of the leaders among these peoples are going to’ side-track everything of this kind in order to protect a few great men among them who do not believe and teach these things. Shall the great body of the common people continue like serfs, to be led by the nose by their denominational .leaders in order to protect the rotten, deadly teaching of a few great men and let our children be damned by it, and through this course help fasten Evolution upon our tax-sup ported schools? No one will deny that these resolutions, in a most clear-cut way, express the beliefs of the great body of Evangelicals. FOR MEN TO HOLD OF FICIAL POSITIONS AND HOLD AND TEACH THINGS CONTRARY TO THE TEACH INGS OF THESE RESOLU TIONS, IS TO OBTAIN MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENSES, AND FOR MEN IN OFFICIAL POSI TIONS TO PAY SALARIES TO SUCH MEN IS MISAP PROPRIATION OF TRUST FUNDS. AND SUCH MEN AND SUCH OFFIC I A L S OUGHT TO HAVE THE MAN HOOD TO RESIGN THEIR POSITIONS. AND IF THEY WILL N'OT RESIGN, THE GREAT COMMON PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER LET UP UNTIL THEY ARE PUT OUT. But if the different religious bodies will continue to be led by the noses by some of their official leaders, and will not protect their children from this insidious, deadly curse, then the voters, as citizens, the Jew, the Christian, the decent infidel who is not an anarchist, should see to it that Evolution is driv en from our tax-supported schools, that the Religious Liberty of the people is pro tected, that the Constitution of the United Staes is upheld.
