May 7, 1951 THE HILLTOP, MARS HILL COLLEGE, MARS HILL, N. C. Page Three ec When this column went to press, the Spring sports record of the Various teams wasn’t too impres sive. All totaled, the tennis, base ball, and track team have encount ered nine opponents and emerged victorious in only two of these nine meetings. Both victories were won by the baseball team. The baseball team has played six games so far and won two and lost four. However, only two of these games were conference games and the “Lions” won one of them, so a conference record of 1 win, 1 loss is not too bad. With these past six games under their belts there should be better times ahead. Not only will the experience of these past games help but the coming of tvarm weather too should help. There are six remaining games, all of which are conference games. The racket swingers have had two matches and lost them both. The first game with Tusculem was lost 4-1 while the second game was lost by only one match, 4-3. This is ^ vast improvement and the results of the next two games should be a different story. Out on their own track, the boys Were held back by cold weather and a wet track. When they met Davidson J. V. in their initial Same, both warm weather and a fast track were something new, and the thin-clads came out on the short end of a 73-58 score. The Pext meet, with East Tennessee State here, will be to the “Lions’ ” advantage since they will be run ning on their home track in the type weather they are used to. The track squad showed up exception ally well in the field events against Davidson. Out of the six field events participated in against Davidson the “Lions” captured four first places and a second. The first coming in the shot, discus, javelin, and pole vault and the Second coming in the high jump. These records are not very im pressive but they do show that the I'oys engaged in athletics at Mars Hill are putting forth a lot of effort. Let’s hope that from here an out the boys can accumulate a >’ecord we can be proud of. Now that the pool has been fill ed, the swimming club is ready to start with a big splash. The tennis elub will also be organized, so girls, ket your rackets and come on down. The hiking club ended their hik- 'ag season this spring with an over sight camping trip to “Little fountain.” Twenty-two girls left campus after the glee club con- *^ert and had a weiner roast on the Srountain. Florence McFadden and ^ary Evelyn Luttrell took it upon *^emselves to keep the fire burning sil night, though none of the girls Actually went to sleep. They were forced to come back about four s’olock Sunday morning because of ^sin, and the rest of the time (un- six o’clock) was spent on the ®ym floor. Coach Hart chaperoned fbe group. Davidson J.V.’s Edge Lions 73-58 Doc takes two firsts By Charles Palmer Running on a fast track and in the warmest weather of the season, the Mars Hill Cinder Squad went down before the Davidson College Junior Varsity Saturday, April 21, 73-58. Doc Ellenburg was high scorer for Mars Hill with ten in dividual points by taking first place in the shot put and discus throw. Mars Hill placed men in each event but never had the lead. The men rallied during the last thirty minutes of the meet but could not close the margin. Led by Bill Ship- ley, who racked up thirteen points, Davidson ran away with the 440 and the 880-yard dash. Davidson took all three places in the broad jump after which Moore, Jones and Palmer, ran a clean sweep of the 2-mile run. Mars Hill also claimed first place in the javelin throw after Harold Davis tossed the wood 147 feet. Plem- mons and McClellon took second and third, respectively. Ted Haggai’s height of 9 feet 6 inches took first place in the pole vault division. Shotgun Taylor took third. Mars Hill clinched the mile relay when anchor-man George Bo bo came from behind to win with a time of 3:43. Bobo also took second in the 440-yard dash. Gib son and Olive ran second and third in the 880-yard dash. Ted Fulp racked up second place for Mars Hill in the mile run. Track Coach Bob Edwards carri ed a high spirited group of men with him to Davidson and in spite of the loss, he is very much pleased with the performance of his spike crew. Examples of the “guts” of Mars Hill trackmen were shown when Connie Rich took a tremend ous spill on the first turn of the 440-yard dash and then picked himself up and finished in the run ning. Dale Lloyd also received quite a shakeup when he failed to clear the last hurdle of the 220- yard dash. Both men will be run ning again in the next meet. Mars Hill will meet East Tenn essee on May 1 at Mars Hill. The men are laying in wait for them because of the walloping they re ceived by E. T. last year. Netters Drop Match 4-3 The Mars Hill Tennis Team journeyed to Tennessee Wesleyan last week only to be defeated 4-3, the final doubles match deciding the contest. In the singles Erwin Potts remained undefeated by downing his opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Dan Glenn, playing in the number five slot, was the only other single winner. In the doubles matches, Potts and Glenn came from behind to win the last two sets and take their match, while Ward and Ritchie lost their match in straight sets. The “Lion” Net Boys have only two more matches and both are at home. Tuesday, May 1, they played Tennessee Wesleyan a return match, and Friday, May 4, they had a return match with Tusculum. Result* Singles: Potts (W): 6-2, 6-4. Ward (L): 4-6, 6-4, 6-8.
