VOL 68, ISSUE 1 THE STUDENT SOURCE FOR NEWS SINCE 1926 SEPTEMBER 8, 1994 FREE PLEASE TAKE ONE Entertainer Barry Drake will make his second appearance at Mars Hill College on Thursday, September 15 at 9 p.m. in the Timberlme. The Student Union Board first brought Drake to MHC as a Greencard Event during the Fall ’93 semester to do a multi-media presentation of ’60s music. It will once j^ain be a Greencard Event. This time, Drake will give a multi-media presentation called “70’s Rock - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” which will celebrate, examine, clarify and put into perspective ten of the most confusing and misunderstood years in our musical history. The 60’s were over... but were they really? As the 70’s began, the Vietnam War, the draft, and Richard Nbcon were still with us, and so was what many would consider some of the best rock music ever made. By the 1970’s, the Beatles and the important artists that followed in their had dramatically expanded the idea of what constituted Rock ’N’ Roll. Groups like Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd were just reaching their full potential in the early 70’s. Singer-songwriters such as James Taylor, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell would make rock music more mellow and personal than ever. By the mid-70’s, with the end of the Vietnam Era, music like Punk and Reggae appeared to rekindle the outlaw spirit of Rock ’2^ Roll. By the late 70’s, these musical forms triggered a New Wave explosion which brought the excitement and creativity back to rock. Drake has often been called a' walking encyclopedia of music, a graduate of Manhattan College, he has been totally involved in the world of music since buying his first Rock ’N’ Roll record in 1954. Growing up in the New York City area, Drake went everywhere there was music to be beard. He saw everyone from Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry at The Brooklyn Paramount in 1957, to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin at The Fillmore in 1967. When San Francisco exploded with the “Summer of Love” in 1967, Drake was there han^ng out on the streets with The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane. In the mid-60’s Drake became a performer and songwriter, and in 1970 was signed to Capitol Records. Since then, Barry has recorded three albums and has toured the U.S. and Europe. Not content to be just a performer, Drake has successfully started his own record company, booking agency and management firm. He is also a respected collector and dealer of rare records. Most recently, Drake has been nominated for The National Assodation of Campus Activities Lecturer of The Year. Combiiung his extenave knowledge of music and his abilities as a dynamic stage performer, Drake has succeeded in making his Rock Lectures among the best and most inspiring in the business.
