identity
From Page 1
the best answer can only be
supplied if the essential identity
of a church-related college is
clearly understood and im
plemented.
In my view this entire question
of the identity of a church-
related college comes into
sharper focus when related to
the problem of our society’s
impersonalism today. Today’s
college students are struggling
with this impersonalism,
searching desperately, I believe,
for meaning and the sound
values that can alone give
purpose and direction to life. It
is surely an essential part of a
church-related college’s identity
to help its students find, in a
manner appropriate for college
students, the meaning and sound
values that can give their lives
purpose.
It would seem to me, then, that
this is indeed an essential part of
the identity of Belmont Abbey
College and that we must clearly
recognize this and assert it.
Otherwise, we cannot be true to
the College’s entire history and
tradition. The central Christian
message embodied in our
Catholic, Benedictine tradition
proclaims the Good News. The
Good News, announced to the
world by Jesus Christ, is this:
Every human being has im
measurable dignity and worth,
and life has a meaning and
purpose that goes beyond our
transient experiences here on
earth; love and concern can and
must conquer hate and hostility;
hope is victorious over despair
and apathy; peace can and
should reign in men’s hearts and
throughout the world.
This central Christian
message - surely the greatest
“meaning-system” the world
has ever known -- must be an
essential part of the identity of
Belmont Abbey College. When
all of us in our entire college
community understand this and
manifest it by word and
example, outside as well as
inside the classroom, this
College will be what it ought to
be, in fact and not simply in
name.
