(DIVISION From Page 6) Western civilization is elected by most of our students as part of the core curriculum. History majors and other interested students acquire a deeper acquaintance with the remote background of their own civilization in ancient history, of its origin, growth, and decline in medieval and modern European history, and of its special regional developments in American and Latin American history. Like all the other disciplines that constitute the liberal arts, the several social sciences aim to make complete human beings, to equip the student with true freedom by liberating him from narrowness of mind, to broaden his outlook and so stimulate his faculties that he will be able to make the most of his situation and constantly better it. News Tn Education Loyola University and Marymount College, Los Angeles, have agreed in prin ciple to unite under one board of trustees and one president, ef fective July 1, 1973. Increased efficiency of operation, sim plification of administrative structure, and elimination of duplication in some areas are the principal reasons for the reorganization. At the centennial celebration of Maryville, Sister Harriet Switzer, president of the college, said: “No college can hope for a strong future if it is financially dependent upon a religious or der. And it is only in close part nership with lay men and women and with the religious of other orders that the Society of the Sacred Heart can carry on its apostolic mission in higher education.” St. Scholastica has developed what it calls the Winton Plan. The Plan is a self-designed, curriculum between the Scholastica student and his self- chosen advisor. Once a student has chosen what he-she wants to do, the College will supply a tutor. The student’s decision becomes a requirement.
