Dr. James L. Quinn, III
A Pioneer In
Nuclear Medicine
Dr. James L. Quinn, III,
known as one of the pioneers of
modern day nuclear medicine
and Director of Nuclear
Medicine at Northwestern
Memorial Hospital, Chicago,
Illinois was the commencement
speaker here for our 95th
Commencement exercise on
May 13, 1973.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L.
Quinn, Jr. of Charlotte, North
Carolina, he received his B.S.
degree from Belmont Abbey in
1955 and his M.D. degree from
Bowman Gray School of
Medicine of Wake Forest in 1959.
Among his many honors and
awards, he is past president of
the Society of Nuclear Medicine
and is presently Trustee of the
society and editor of the Year
Book of Nuclear Medicine, a
position he had held since 1966. A
diplomat of the American Board
of Radiology, he was given the
distinguished alumni award in
medicine from Wake Forest
University.
He taught at Bowman Gray
School of Medicine from 1960 -
1964. In addition to his duties at
Northwestern Memorial
Hospital, he is presently
Chairman of the Nuclear
Science Committee, Nor
thwestern University and former
Associate Professor there. He is
also a faculty member of the
U.S.N. Medical School,
Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Quinn
has acted as consultant to
numerous agencies but par
ticularly enjoyed his tenure as
consultant to the Indian
Government, Bhabha Atomic
Research Center, Bombay, India
in 1968.
Dr. Quinn co-authored a movie
concerning the use of
radioisotopes in diagnosing a
type of high blood pressure
caused by a narrowing of the
artery that leads to the kidneys.
He has written Scintillation
Scanning in Clinical Medicine,
and has published or presented
seventy articles and papers.
He is married to the former
Miss Mary Jacqueline Leonard.
They have three children, one
boy and two girls.

D.F. Gunnels of the Sears-
Roebuck Foundation recently
presented a $1,000 library grant
to Reverend John P. Bradley,
president of the College. The
gift, designed to supplement the
library’s normal book
acquisition, is part of a package
of grants totalling $48,900 which
were distributed to forty-one
privately supported colleges and
universities in North Carolina.
Belmont Abbey was one of nine
Charlotte-area colleges to
receive a Sears Foundation
grant.

Chapter
News
On March 15, 1973, the Rich
mond Alumni Chapter hosted
prospective Abbey students and
their parents at its annual Spring
social. A slide presentation
which the chapter prepared was
shown to the guests to acquaint
them more fully with the Abbey.
J.P. Collins of the Admissions
office represented BAC at the
party.
The Richmond Alumni Chapter
has pledged ten students to the
Abbey for the 1973-74 academic
year, and from all indications
the chapter is meeting its
commitment. In fact, it hopes to
