Focus Bllsli WINSLOW PH.D. H. HARTFORD, Associate Professor, Winslow H. ‘Doc’ Hartford, a trans planted Yankee from Newton, Mass., heads the Department of Chemistry at Belmont Abbey College. ‘Win’ Hartford spent the first quarter of his life in the New England setting. He commuted to Boston University, where he earned the bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He then entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue graduate study and in 1933 was awarded the doctorate of philosophy in the field of inorganic chemistry. The nation was in the throes of the great depression, and ‘Win’ Hartford was one of the few new Ph.D’s to walk out of the University and into a job. He was tapped by Mutual Chemical Co. for a post in their laboratories in Baltimore, Md. So he embarked on his career in industry in this city and continued until 1958, when the company, by now a part of Allied Chemical, trans ferred him to Syracuse, N.Y. Here he resumed research for new products until he retired from the firm in 1969. It was during those years in Baltimore that he met Mary Haviland. Both performed in a community dramatic group. In time they were married and were blessed with a son and a daughter. He was always happiest when around young people, and so he became active in scouting, serving as troop master in both Baltimore and Syracuse. He also co-authored the Boy Scout merit badge handbook in chemistrv. An ardent enthusiast for the outdoors, ‘Win’ joined and later served as chairman of the Mountain Club of Maryland. These were people who were October, 1973 - CROSSROADS - Page 5 addicted to the crisp, fresh air of the Appalachians. They organized one of the first ski clubs in the area — long before this sport became nationally popular. After his transfer to Syracuse, he continued his association with mountain buffs who had a project of maintaining trails in the Adirondacks. Today he is a member of the con servation committee of the Sierra Club of Charlotte. This love of nature and of forests also led him to become a member of the American Wood Preservers Association, a group who are seeking to promote conservation through the discoveries of science. Over the years he has published numerous scientific papers on the chemistry and technology of chromium compounds and wood preservation, and was the recipient of company awards for scientific achievement. Since joining the faculty of Belmont Abbey College in 1970, ‘Doc’ Hartford has been an energetic instructor and student advisor. He has been involved in various activities on campus. Last year he directed the very successful musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” His love of the arts complements his achievements in the field of science - he has . appeared in dramatic produc tions of the Charlotte Little Theatre and the Mint Museum. He has for years enjoyed choral singing as a member of a male chorus in Baltimore and Syracuse, and now sings with the Charlotte choral society. For relaxation, he and Mary play bridge (they have even won some Master’s points in tour naments), and are avid readers of detective and mystery stories. At informal parties ‘doc’ can sooner or later be found plunking out tunes on a piano, which he has learned to play quite well by ear for his own enjoyment. Most recently he has been planning and seeking to promote an inter-disciplinary con centration in environmental studies and conservation. He has introduced a special course in ‘‘Man and His Environment” for non-science students which has proved to be very popular. Belmont Abbey College is for tunate to count a man of such rich experience and broad in terests among its faculty, and we look forward to the many con tributions a man of his talents will make to our educational program.
