This is the seventh successive year Coach Dudkio has received this honor. The Crusaders, under Dudko’s direction, also won their seventh distinct championship at the close of their 1973 season. The Crusaders participated in the National NAIA Tournament in 1967, and were runners-up in NAIA Regionals in 1968, 1969, 1972 and 1973. This year Dudko coached his team to the District 26 Championship with a 9-0-1 record. The Crusaders have also placed 14 of their players on the All-South squad during the past seven years. Born in Rowno, Poland, in 1934, Coach Dudko has keen memories of the Nazi invasion of Poland, and his boyhood is a blurred picture of the horrors of war: invasions by the Germans countered by invasions by the Russians until 1945 when, 11 years of age, he was sent to a labor detention camp in Plaven, Germany, but this time under American command. In 1949 he came to the United States.and in 1954 he enrolled in Belmont Abbey College. Dudko starred on the Abbey’s first soccer team in 1957. A Belmont Abbey graduate, he received a graduate degree from Auburn and returned to the Abbey to teach. He is now an Assistant Professor of economics. In 1971, Pope Paul VI bestowed the Papal Knighthood on Dudko. Credit for this year’s success should also be given to its defense. In the 13 matches played, the Crusaders gave up only 18 goals and only 5 goals in NAIA District 26 competition. Making up the Abbey booters defense were: John Keaton, Ed Burns, Joe Feeney, Mousadak Soussi, Brian Murphy and Frank Munchinski. After defeating the Guilford Quakers for the District 26 NAIA title, the Abbey Crusaders took on Berry College from Rome, Ga., in the 1st round of NAIA Regional Tournament on Nov. 14. The Abbey booters, led by Brian Murphy in the goal, were able to keep Berry College from scoring. Bill Soussi scored the only Abbey goal on a direct kick. The Abbey won 1-0 and went on to the Regional finals on Nov. 15, meeting Erskine College. After battling to a 0-0 tie in regulation play the game went into overtime. In the first 5 minutes of overtime Erskine’s Bert Passes scored on a penalty, kick. In the second 5 minutes overtime with 1 minute remaining. Abbey Crusader Chris Antwi scored to tie the game 1-1. The game then went into sudden death overtime. Whoever would score the 1st goal would now win the game. In the 3rd 10 minutes sudden death overtime period, Erskine’s Ino Romero scored to lead Erskine to a 2-1 victory over the Crusaders. The Abbey booters ended their soccer season with a 12-3-2 record.
