IN MEMORIAM Leo F. Henebry - Class of 1911 Edward B. Purcell - Class of 1915 George E. O’Reily - Class of 1918 Bishop Vincent Waters - Class of 1921 January - February, 1975 - CROSSROADS - Page 5 .Bishop Walters from page one In 1953 Bishop Waters took a stand against segregation and prejudice against blacks. In a letter to the diocese, he said: “there is no segregation of races to be tolerated in any Catholic Church in the Diocese of Raleigh. The pastors are charged with the carrying out of this teaching and shall tolerate nothing to the contrary...” Bishop Waters came under fire in recent years from some of the priests under his jurisdiction when they expressed dissatisfaction with his autocratic views of church governance. They complained that Bishop Waters held on to idle church property worth millions of dollars while some parishes wallowed in debt. They asked for a diocesan senate in which priests could participate, but he ignored the request. About 20 percent of the state’s priests signed a petition that he resign. Further controversy followed in 1972 when Bishop Waters expelled five Sisters of Providence from the Diocese because they insisted on wearing secular clothing, rather than religious habits, in their teaching duties. Bishop Michael J. Begley of the Diocese of Charlotte said Bishop Waters’ “missionary zeal and his concern for God’s people cannot be measured. He was a leader in r'any fields, one of which vas civil rights, as he fought for the civil rights of the black people in integrating schools, churches and all Catholic institutions.” Bishop Waters was the third bishop in the history of the Raleigh diocese, and a participant in the historic Vatican II Council. It could take six months for the Vatican to appoint a successor to Bishop Waters, although the Most Rev. George E. Lynch will handle ad ministrative duties until that time.
