^000 7 cccssu WOrTfl ION NC 27 5 U Belmont Abbe^ College VOLUME 4II ISSUE BELMONT, NORTH CAROLINA 28012 AUGUST, 1975 Abbot Edmund Resigns Father Jude Cleary Named Abbot-Elect The Very Reverend Jude Cleary, O.S.B., 49, was designated today as abbot-elect of Belmont Abbey in a special election held in the monastery chapel. Following confirmation by Pope Paul VI, which is expected to take ap proximately four weeks. Father Jude' will become the fifth abbot in Belmont Abbey’s 99-year history. Forty-seven members of the Belmont Abbey tv Abbot Edmund McCaffrey community voted in the election, which was conducted by the president of the federation of Benedictine monasteries to which Belmont Abbey belongs, the Right Reverend Martin Burne, O.S.B., of St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown, New Jersey. The selection of a new abbot was necessitated by the resignation of the Right Reverend Edmund F. McCaffrey, O.S.B., on June 3. McCaffrey had been abbot since March ' 1970. He "Will continue to serve as a monk at Belmont Abbey. Since Abbot Edmund’s resignation, the prior of Belmont Abbey, Father Peter N. Stragand, O.S.B., has been serving as apostolic ad ministrator. He will remain in charge of the monastery until Father Jude’s election is ap proved by Pope Paul. Father Jude came to Belmont Abbey in 1950, following his graduation from Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He was professed hs a Benedictine monk in November 1951 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956. Since his ordination. Father Jude’s services to Belmont Abbey College have been many and varied. He has served as mathematics instructor, chaplain, academic dean pro tempore, registrar, and development director. The physical expansion at the College is due in large part to his direction. He was appointed president of Belmont Abbot-Elect Jude Cleary Abbey College in May 1967 and served in that .capacity until the ap pointment of The Very Reverend John P. Bradley in August 1970. He has served as assistant to Father Bradley since 1970. Father Jude was born in Savannah, Georgia, and is the son of the late George Joseph and Annie Travers Ccleary. He attended parochial schools in Savannah and served in the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program during World War II. He has two brothers, William and Bernard, both of Savannah. 125 Belmont Abbey Seniors Receive Degrees One hundred and twenty-five seniors were awarded bachelor’s degrees during com mencement exercises on Sunday, June 18. The following students graduated with honors: Summa cum laude: Paul Ellis Brown, Jr., of Burlington, N.J.; Grace Johanne DiSanto of Morganton, N.C.; and Donald William Pruitt of Kings Mountain, N.C. Magna cum laude: John Aloysius Beyrau, Jr., of Lynchburg, Va.; Gary Maynard Greene of Lowell, N.C.; Danny Albert McBee of Gastonia, N.C.; Kevin Murray McGowan of Richmond, Va.; and Glenn James Trull, Jr. of Belmont, N.C. Cum laude: Walter Duncan Brown, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; Michael Richard Dove of Winston- Salem, N.C.; Kathy Haverty Drumm of Mt. Holly, N.C.; William Liles Jones of Wadesboro, N.C.; Dominick Francis Terranova of Warlton, N.J.; and Malcolm Niven Thrower of Charlotte, N.C. Robert Lee Daniel, Jr., a senior Economics and Business major from Chesapeake, Va., won the coveted “Abbeyman of the Year” award. (Continued P. 4) Sam J.
