Page 4 - CROSSROADS - August, 1975 ALUMNI NEWS by Mrs. Mary Cook ’30 -- Enjoyed so much the letter from Ed Mansfield to Father Cuthbert reminiscing about BAC’s first state-recognized junior college graduating class - Class of ’30. Ed has his own business and lives at 523 West Hillsdale, San Mateo, California, if anyone would like to get in touch. ’31 - Thank you, George Soter, for your letter bringing me up-to-date on some of our alumni. It was gopd to see you and the other alumni in Richmond, at the celebration honoring Father Cuthbert. ’38 — It was good to hear from Stan Romanoski, who lives in Morgantown, West Virginia. Your messages have been delivered. ’39 - John Kabas has been named vice president in charge of the operations division of the Bank of North Carolina in Raleigh. He was senior vice president and Piedmont area officer at Bankers Trust of South Carolina. He and Betty Jean have one son, Scott. ’40 - Enjoyed the cards sent by Gilbert Farley on his trip this summer around the world, particularly those from Australia and New Zealand. ’49 - Congratulations to the Pete Camjpbells on the arrival of their fifth child, Matthew Michael, February 12. Peteis with IBM in Raleigh. Bob Molo is president of Molo Oil Co. in Dubuque, Iowa. ’50 - Dan Gunter has been nominated for an eight- year term on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. Our deepest sympathy to Tommy Dunn on the death of his wife, Edna, May 28. Alumni who were here in the 60’s will remember Edna as the school nurse. Our sympathy also to their two children, Dickie and Mary Lou. ’52 - Robert Yacobi, a member of the law firm of Bateman, Beale & Yacobi, has been appointed a judge of the Newport News (Va.) Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. ’54 - John Chesser, his wife and four children (John, Laura, Tommy and William), came by for a visit the last of June. John is working for the South Carolina Health Administration and lives in Lancaster. ’56 - Congratulations to Fran and Chuck Muller, who celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on June 17, with Mass celebrated in their home in Louisville, Ky. by Father Donald. Thanks for the lovely picture, Fran, and we look forward to seeing all of you during our centennial celebration. ’59 — Dr. John Munzenrlder presented a paper on “Clinical Usage of High Energy Photon and Electron Beam Therapy” at the joint meeting of the New England Society for Radiation Oncology and the New England Chapter of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, New Hampshire, in May. ’61 - John von Bargen is commissioner of recreation in Pelham, New York, and he and Diane live in Mt. Vernon. Congratulations to the Carter Loftons on the arrival of their new baby. Congratulations also to Jim Giermanski, who received his doctorate from the University of Miami on May 4. ’62 “ Congratulations to Douglas Weimer, who received his doctorate in education from the Univer sity of Rochester (N.Y.) in January and teaches English in the city of Rochester school system. ’63 - Joe McDermott is married and owns the Locker Room Lounge in West Orange, N.Y. Bob Siebert completed the LL.M. in taxation at NYU last June. He is still with the I.R.S. as an attorney in estate tax and lives in Jamaica, N.Y. ’64 - Bob Montgomery stopped by for a short visit the end of May. He and Kay and their six children are moving back to Gastonia as Bob is now with Johnston Mills in Charlotte. The same day. Bill Flcke and wife, Joanne, and her sister visited, and Bill gave us a lot of news of alumni in the New York - New Jersey area. Bill is still with All State Insurance Company in White Plains where they live. Brian Garry is a policeman in New York City. He and Eileen have two cbUdren, Sean and Regina, and live in Congers. Harry Cosgrove is sales representative for The Kirk Company in Charlotte. ’65 — Frank Gill is manager of the Arizona Hotel and Lounge in Long Beach, New York, where he and Clare live. Congratulations to Alice and Pat McGrath, who adopted their first child, Jared Peter, last August. Pat works for the County Welfare Department in Stow, Ohio. Thanks for your note, Alice. Franl^Dowgwllla and his wife will leave Japan for Hawaii the first of Augustforhisnexttourof duty there. Reginald Wright has been promoted by I.R.S. from group manager in Hickory to staff assistant to the chief of the audit division in Greensboro, where he, his wife, Janice, and sons, Robbie and Mark, live. ’66 - Miriam Arnold has enrolled in a graduate course in reading at the University of Santa Clara (California) and will visit with her two daughters who live there. Kevin Braddish teaches social science in Bayshore (N.Y.) Junior High School and lives in Long Beach. Randy Dodd is supervisor of recreation in Long Beach, N.Y., where he and his wife and three children live. Joe Ridder is with Marine Midland S.E. Bank in Nyack, New York, and lives in Pearl River. ’67 - Dan Talley is now youth counselor for Gaston Community Action in the Mt. Holly and Stanley (N.C.) areas. Richard Phillips is a salesman with Rosenthal China Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. Congratulations and best wishes to Greg Wessel and Karen Anne Field, who were married June 1 in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Carmichael, California. ’68 - Denis Deane is assistant principal at Bedford (Va.) Elementary School and his wife, Barbara (Gorcys, SH ’66), is speech pathologist for Bedford schools. Denis has been president of the teachers association there this year. Joe Hoffman teaches history in Long Beach (N.Y.) Junior High School. He and Chris have three children, Regina, Kristin, and David de Bushere. Pamela Wright is an instructor for the Army and Navy Academy at Camp Pendleton, California. Don Holden is chairman of the physical education department and coaches at St. Francis Prep in New York. He and Joan have a daughter. Heather Anne, born December 24, 1974. John Sullivan has been promoted to assistant vice president at Aiken-Speir, Inc. and assigned to the mortgage loan department in Charlotte. ’69 - Ed O’Brien coaches and teaches in Campbell County, Va., and he and his wife live in Bedford. Carlos de Torres was the recipient of the UNC School of Social Work’s Annie Kizer Bost Award, presented annually to students who have made the most effective use of the two-year master’s program in social work and are taking employment in public social service in North Carolina. He will join the Durham County Community Mental Health Center as coordinator of adult services, where he has been an interim coor dinator. Thanks for your note, Adele, giving us news of the Ed Schillers. Ed is chief chemist and manager of quality control for Photo Corporation of America with headquarters in Matthews, N.C. He has recently returned from Copenhagen, Denmark, where he supervised the installation of new photo-processing equipment at PCA’s branch office there. Thanks also for sending George Englert’s current address. George and Theresa live in Burke, Ya-. and he works as an accountant for the federal government in Washington, D.C. Congratulations to Gwen and Ken Szyarto on the arrival of Christopher Scott on March 25. Ken teaches and coaches at St. John Vianny High School in Matawan, New Jersey, and they live in Shrewsbury. ’70 - Thank you, Richard Vitolo, for updating us on your activities. Richard is married to Janet Hoffman and they have a four-year-old daughter, Amy. He is attending UNC-Charlotte, has completed his second year of CPA study, and lives in Charlotte. Thanks also for your letter, Chester Zukowski. After completing his masters in international marketing, Chester worked for J.C. Penney as assistant corporate buyer in New York City and other areas for two-and-a-half years. In November 1974 he joined Sobering - Plough’s International Development department and has just been promoted to marketing manager for finished goods exported to Mexico. In June he was transferred to Memphis, Tennessee, where he and Barbara live. Tim Donovan stopped by the middle of June. After leaving the Abbey, he traveled in Europe for six months and worked along the east coast in resort hotels. He has just completed graduate school at Xavier University (Ohio), receiving his masters in business administration. (Continued P. 6) Father Raphael Fr. Raphael Celebrates 25th Jubilee Fr. Raphael Gerard Bridge, O.S.B., assistant professor of History at Belmont Abbey College, celebrated the twenty- fifth jubilee of his or dination on June 11. Since his ordination at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa., Fr. Raphael has spent only one year away from the Abbey. In 1960-61, he taught at Benedictine High School in Rich mond, Va. He has been faculty moderator for athletics at Belmont Abbey College since 1955 and was Dean of Students from 1957 to 1960. He has also served the College as chaplain and main tenance director. ...Graduates (From P. 1) The graduates, representing fifteen states with several originating from foreign countries, attended a solemn academic mass on Simday morning in the Abbey Cathedral. The baccalaureate sermon was delivered by the Most Reverend James S. Rausch, general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, D.C. Following the mass, a buffet luncheon was held for graduates, parents, and guests in the Abbey’s Maurus Dining Hall. The commencement exer cises started at 3:00 p.m. in the Wheeler Center. Former North Carolina Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr. gave the commencement address. Honorary doctorates were bestowed on Ervin and Rausch, and also on the Most Reverend Michael J. Begley, bishop of Charlotte, and Mrs. Kathleen Price Bryan of Greensboro, North Carolina.
