Herndl, Jones Receive Grants Two faculty members have received $2,000 stipends from the National Endowment for the Humanities for summer study and research. Dr. George Herndl, chairman of Belmont Abbey’s English Department is using the grant to do research for his forthcoming book on literary criticism. Dr. Robert Jones, chairman of the Political Science Department, is attending a summer seminar for college teachers at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York. Competition for the NEH grants is very strong, with only a small percentage of applicants being selected for the awards. Dr. Herndl describes his book as, “...an at tempt to find in the chaos of competing theories of literary criticism some general order that can be grasped by an un dergraduate student.’’ Dr. Herndl has been a member of the Abbey faculty for 17 years. He completed his un dergraduate studies at the Catholic University of America, and received his Ph.D. from UNC- Chapel Hill. Dr. Jones, in his third year as an Abbey faculty member, received his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame. He came to Belmont Abbey from a teaching position at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire. He is attending the seminar on “Diplomacy in International History’’ conducted by Dr. Adda B. Bozeman, whom he describes as, “...an in ternationally - renowned scholar who is well published in the history of diplomacy.’’ Abbey Recruiters Do Yeoman Job In the Fall of 1974, 43 percent of Belmont Abbey College’s total enrollment came from the seven states where Abbey recruiters J.P. Collins and Jay Briody do their thumping. Con sidering that North Carolina isn’t part of their territory, this figure is even more impressive. J.P. has been selling high school seniors on the merits of Belmont Abbey College since his graduation in 1972. His efforts are concentrated in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. He is married to the former Victoria Pryzgocki, a 1973 Sacred Heart grad, who is almost as involved in the recruiting process as her husband. J.P. and Vicki live at 1516 Eleventh Avenue, R.D. 3, Toms River, New Jersey 08753. Jay is a member of the 1974 Abbey graduating class and spends his time talking to prospects in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. He is single and lives at 5802 L Torrington Drive, Springfield, Va. 22152. If you live in the territory covered by Jay Briody and J.P. Collins, Crossroads suggests that you send them the names and addresses of student prospects rather than contacting the Ad missions office.
