Page 7 - CROSSROADS - October, 1975 Belmont Abbey Soccer Saying that the 1975 Belmont Abbey soccer team willbe the best ever is a bit premature. However, with the array of talent that Coach Stan Dudko has assembled, this year’s edition of Crusaders could very well achieve that distinction. Under Dudko, in an eight-year span, the Crusaders have won eight consecutive District 26 NAIA titles; they have been runners-up in the regionals six (6) con secutive times since winning the southern regionals in 1967 where they finished sixth in the national tournament. The Crusaders return nine players off last year’s 12-3-1 team, and have added several top flight newcomers to that contingent of veterans. “Strength-wise, we are about the same as last season,” says Dudko, who has amassed an enviable 92-37-12 in his eight year career. “Talent-wise, we are probably better in in dividual skills. “We’ve had good performance in our pre season practices. We’ve been working hard, and I’m real pleased with .the effort of the fellows. “Our schedule is a little tougher this year. We’ve added Federal City College, and they were national college division champions last year. Appalachian State University is always tough. They were Southern Conference champions last year. Carolina is always tough, so is High Point; and Davidson is always good. “We could lose in some of those games, but you never know. They will be good experience, and they’re .not all District games. “1 wouldn’t settle for less than a District title this year.” Leading the veteran returnees is one of the best players to ever don an Abbey soccer uniform, co-captain Belgassem A1 Soussi. Bill, as he is known about campus, is a native of Benghazi, Libya. Only a junior, he has already shattered the all- time school scoring record in soccer with a two-year total of 54 goals, finishing second in the naticxi his freshman year with 32 goals, and in the top 10 nationally his sophomore year with 22 B w B B B _ . Bill has been named to the All-District and All-South team in both of his seasons, and was named Most Valuable Player in the District both years. “Bill is worth three players to us,” says Dudko of his prize. “He’s just great. He can out-run and out^jerform anyone. His shots are fantastic. Where we need him most is where he will play. You just can’t say too much about him.” In addition to Bill, the Crusaders also have available the services of two of his younger brothers, Mosadak, a sophomore, and Fikri, a feeshman. Mosadak was also named All-District and All-South last season in his freshman year, playing center fullback. “Mosadak is to the defense what his brother Bill is to the offense,” says Dudko. “He is just a great player.” “Fil^i should be quite an asset to us this year,” says Dudko. “He is a good halfback and fullback. He has ex cellent skills and reads the game well.” The other co-captain of the Crusaders this season TALKING IT OVER - Belmont Abbey soccer coach Stan Dudko (center) discusses the prospects for the 1975 season with co-captains Belgassem Soussi (left) and Randy Schambach (right). is junior Randy Schambach, a native of Guatemala City, Guatemala. Schambach scored 20 goals in his freshman season. “He can play any position for us.” says Dudko. “It just depends on where we need him the most.” The’goalie for Belmont Abbey this season will be the only senior on the squad, Frank Mun- chinski. “Munchinski is from Richmond, Va., and didn’t play soccer until coming to Belmont Abbey. “Munch is a fearless player and what he lacks is height, he makes up for it in courage and guts,” says Dudko. “He’s one of the most dedicated players on the squad.” Other players that Dudko will be relying on heavily are Juan Arellano, a freshman from Cali, Colombia; Robert Campbell, a freshman from Kearny, N.J.; Steve Carretero, a sophomore from Union, N.J.; Ernesto De Lima, a sophomore from Cali, Colombia; Pete Geris, a sophomore from Lyn chburg, Va.; and Bill Kituski, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Va.
