Page 4 - CROSSROADS - December, 1975 ALL/HNI NEWS by Mrs. Mary Cook ’10 -- Thank you for your note, Robert Gloner. He is now 80 years old and retired from the Navy with the rank of Admiral. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1915 and served in both World War I and II. He now lives in Richmond, Va. ’33 - Father Patrick Donahue is the Catholic Chaplain at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Va. ’39 -- Congratulations to John Kabas, who has been promoted to senior vice president and cashier of the Bank of North Carolina and senior vice president of its parent company, Bancshares of North Carolina, Inc., in Raleigh, where he and his wife, Betty Jean, and son Scott, live. ’40 - Congratulations to Allen Mack, who has been promoted to Captain in the U.S. Navy. He and Kathy are now living in Louisville, Ky. ’48 -- Enjoyed the letter from Michael Ellis which Father Cuthbert let me read. Mike and his wife Janice, daughter Janice and two sons, David and Andrew, live in Metairie, La. Mike has been chronically ill with a rare disease and physically unable to work for several years. Our best wishes and prayers, Mike. ’54 -- Congratulations to Joe Bumgardner (’54) and his wife Sarah (’62) who this summer received education specialist degrees from Appalachian State University. Joe is principal of Kiser Elementary School in Stanley and Sarah is a kindergarten teacher at Carr Elementary in Dallas. Both now hold ad vanced principal’s certificates. The degree is an in termediate degree between the M.A. and Ph.D. ’58 - Enjoyed the article in the Gastonia Gazette about Richard Tilley’s race horse named Belmont Abbey, the grandson of Native Dancer. Dick raises and races thoroughbreds and has five horses and says Belmont Abbey is the best. ’59 - Congratulations to Zean Jamison, who won the Oldsmobile Cutlass in the WSOC Razzle-Dazzle contest with the slogan “WSOC makes my troubles travel.” ’60 - Francis “Bevo” Clair is with Exxon in Charleston, S.C. Send us some news of yourself, Be'’o. It has been a long time since we heard from you. ’62 - It was good to see Father Paschal Morlino when he came down for Father Alcuin’s funeral on October 27. Father Paschal is the director of the Adelphoi House in Latrobe, Penna., a home for homeless boys, and associate pastor of St. Vincent Basilica. ’65 - We have been told that Bob Edwards is working for a travel agency in Little Rock, Arkansas. Will someone send us his address? ’67 ~ Congratulations to Ben Farmer, who was selected Realtor of the Year for Savannah, Ga. He is owner and broker for Ben Farmer Realty and has just graduated from Georgia Graduate Realtors Institute and earned the coveted G.R.I. designation which, symbolizes professionalism in the industry. He and Connie have two children, Jeff 7 and Christy 5, and they live in Savannah. Maureen and Jim Christian stopped by the Abbey on their way to Birmingham, where Jim will be an assistant hospital director trainee with the Veterans Administration. He was a hospital specialist with the VA in Washington, D.C. Enjoyed the article, witlf picture in both the Charlotte Observer and Charlotte News on Chuck Sullivan, who is participating in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg school system’s poet-in residence program. Chuck’s book, “Vanishing Species” has just been published and has gotten great reviews. Congratulations to Hope and Kevin Soden on the arrival of Colleen on October 29. Kevin is in residence at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, but lives in Belmont. Thank you, Ed McGarry, for sending me news of yourself. Ed and Cindy (Jack.son, SHC ’68) have been married for five years and have a 15-month old daughter, Erin Elizabeth. Ed is assistant to the treasurer for Tucson Realty & Trust Co. in Tucson, Arizona, where they live. It was good to see Chris and Art Gazzo when they came for the Sig Ep Weekend in November. They haye a two-year-old daughter, Nicole, and Art teaches social studies in the • tenth grade at Williamsville, New York. '68 - Luto Rodriguez is vice president of Medallion Paint and Color Co. in Miami, where he and Maruchi and young son Lusito live. Thanks for your note, Ed Antosek, telling us that you are now associated with Lykens Osteopathic Associates, Inc. and practicing in Lykens, Pa. It was good to see you when you came for Father Cuthbert Day, and good luck in your practice! Jack Hanahan brought me the card from Ray Smith. He is now known as Ray Jason and is winding up his second national tour with the Jefferson Starship. Ray says, “The act has been a big hit, especially at Radio City Music Hall.” He is now living in San Francisco. Good luck, Ray, and let us hear from you. ’69 - Congratulations to Pat (Rafferty - SHC ’71) and Chuck Collins, whose baby daughter Jennifer Page was baptized by Father Oscar in Belmont Abbey Cathedral on November 1. Chuck is a Captain in the U.S. Marines stationed at Jacksonville, N.C. ’70 - Anthony Pulcrano was sworn in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign at the Norfolk Naval Air Station on Oc tober 6. He is now studying Radiation Health at Bethesda. His wife Eleanora and three-year-old daughter Deborah are resi4^Wg in Richmond at the present time. Thanks for your IfMe, Eleanora. Keep us informed. Robert Vecchio is in the restaurant business with his father in Jacksonville, N.C. He has one son, Robert, Jr., born June 19, 1974. ’71 - George Coombs is teaching with the Maryknoll Fathers in Hong Kong. It was good to see Richard Hoefling when he visited the Abbey in October. He is with Tacoma Investment Co. in Winston-Salem, where he and Diane (Klinker, SHC ’71) and son Matthew John live. ’72 - Michael Arnold is living in Clearwater and teaching Junior High School Math at Blessed Sacrament School in Seminole, Fla. ’73 - Mark Schultz has received the Navy dental scholarship for his last two years of dental school. He was commissioned last December and upon graduation will serve two years as a Navy dentist. ’74 - Paul Zambito is doing his Master’s in Business Administration at Appalachian State and hopes to be going to Virginia Commonwealth for a Master’s in Hospital Administration.. Paul told me that Douglas Kelr is in the hospital administration program at Charlotte Memorial and will be working under the Duke Endowment. Theresa Llffrlg is serving as a Word Over the World Ambassador for The Way Bib lical Research & Teaching Ministry in Independence, Missouri. Our deepest sympathy to the family of John Patrick Yanch, who died of pneumonia October 13. Jack Wurpel is a pharmacologist with Carter - Wallace in Cranbury, N.J., doing cardiovascular and C.N.S. research. ’75 - Mike Bowling is a management trainee with Avis Rental Cars in the Washington, D.C. area and will be attending the University of Maryland for graduate work in Business. It was good to see you, Mike, when you visited the Abbey in early November. John Monaco is working as an auditor for the New York State Department of Labor and attending graduate school at C.W. With the ink still drying on his “cum laude” diploma, he once again charged into the ‘real world’ to slay dragons and build new empires. He was hired last year by St. Stephen Academy (S.C.), and was promptly granted the position of headmaster, (a title which secretly delights him), where he now rides herd over some 140 students. Among his many awards and ac complishments in life are a founder’s seat on the Charleston Opera Company, membership in Outstanding Young Men of America, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Univer sities, and it was recently announced that his biography would appear in Personalities of the South. Dr. Francis Kearns Lectures At Abbey Belmont Abbey College invited the public to hear Dr. Francis Kearns, distinguished author and lecturer in American literary circles, speaking in the Honors Program lecture series on, “The Black Experience in American Literature. A New York native. Dr. Kearns presently serves as Professor of English, Herbert Lehman College, Bronx, N.Y. In recent years he has lectured and taught in several European and African countries. Dr. Kearns spoke In the Auditorium of the Abbot Vincen* Taylor Library, Thursday evening, Oc tober 23rd at 8 o’clock.
