February, 1976, CROSSROADS, page 8 WBTV Carolina Classic Gardner- Webb's Bulldogs Edge Out Lenoir Rhyne V/' GOING FOR TWO - Desmond Dennis (In white jersey) throws up a shot over teammate Clint Bryant while other members of the Belmont Abhey basketball team look on during a recent practice session. Dennis has been the Crusaders’ star during the past two games, scoring 42 points and grabbing 24 rebounds. The first annual WBTV Carolina Classic held at Belmont Abbey’s Wheeler Center turned out to be a very suc cessful venture for the eight participating schools with each school receiving regional television exposure through both the various commercials publicizing the event and by various spots on the campuses of the eight schools. The event was won, not surprisingly, by Gardner- Webb which defeated Lenoir Rhyne, 88-83 in the Saturday afternoon televised championship game and the cham pionship game proved to be just as exciting as those that led up to it. Attendance was much as expected at the event with both the Thursday and Friday evening sessions drawing capacity crowds along with the Saturday championship contest. The opening game between Pfeiffer and Barber-Scotia set the mood for the tournament as Pfeiffer escaped with a 58-55 win while the game between Lenoir Rhyne and Livingstone proved to be even more exciting as Lenoir Rhyne won, 76-74. Gardner-Webb eased by Belmont Abbey, 74-64, in the opening game of the second session while the opening day’s grand finale proved to be just that as Johnson C. Smith nipped Catawba, 126-122 in double overtime. Barber-Scotia eliminated Livingstone, 80-60, in Friday’s opening game and that was followed by the Catawba,- Belmont Abbey game in which Catawba moved past the Crusaders, 83-69. Gardner-Webb ad vanced to the cham pionship game by beating J.C. Smith, 86-81, and Lenoir Rhyne nipped Pfeiffer, 73-71, to also advance. The championship game drew a slightly smaller crowd than did the previous evening sessions due to the uniqueness of seeing the small college teams on television according to both Lenoir Rhyne coach Bob Hodges and Bulldog mentor Eddie Holbrook. “We were very pleased with the way the tour nament turned out,’’ said WBTV promotions director Charlie Pittman. “We learned a lot in running it this year and are looking forward to improving it next year.’’ It was an event enjoyed by all.
