GOING FOR TWO - Desmond Dennis (In white
jersey) throws up a shot over teammate Clint Bryant
while other members of the Belmont Abhey basketball
team look on during a recent practice session. Dennis
has been the Crusaders’ star during the past two
games, scoring 42 points and grabbing 24 rebounds.
The first annual WBTV
Carolina Classic held at
Belmont Abbey’s
Wheeler Center turned
out to be a very suc
cessful venture for the
eight participating
schools with each school
receiving regional
television exposure
through both the various
commercials publicizing
the event and by various
spots on the campuses of
the eight schools.
The event was won, not
surprisingly, by Gardner-
Webb which defeated
Lenoir Rhyne, 88-83 in the
Saturday afternoon
televised championship
game and the cham
pionship game proved to
be just as exciting as
those that led up to it.
Attendance was much
as expected at the event
with both the Thursday
and Friday evening
sessions drawing
capacity crowds along
with the Saturday
championship contest.
The Thursday and
Friday afternoon crowds
were only fair but that
was expected due to the

have not attempted to

As you may surmise, we
at the Abbey look upon
the Centennial year 1976
as a year of opportunity
for the College in many
directions, and we hope,
with your help, it will
become also a
memorable time for all

those who have passed
through.
Our need for this in
formation stems from (1)
a sincere desire within
the several departments
to evaluate and seek to
,improve the quality of
instruction and career
preparation; (2) a
renewed effort to involve
alumni in a greater
numbers as we plan
Centennial events; and.
(3) the hope that we can
effectively organize a
Belmont Abbey Alumni
association as a working
arm of the College, as
well as a resource for its
members.
I cannot refrain from
adding that we sincerely
hope the response to this
plea through Crossroads
will be better than ever.
We are eager to serve
you.

The opening game
between Pfeiffer and
Barber-Scotia set the
mood for the tournament
as Pfeiffer escaped with
a 58-55 win while the
game between Lenoir
Rhyne and Livingstone
proved to be even more
exciting as Lenoir Rhyne
won, 76-74.
Gardner-Webb eased
by Belmont Abbey, 74-64,
in the opening game of
the second session while
the opening day’s grand
finale proved to be just
that as Johnson C. Smith
nipped Catawba, 126-122
in double overtime.
Barber-Scotia
eliminated Livingstone,
80-60, in Friday’s opening
game and that was
followed by the Catawba,-
Belmont Abbey game in
which Catawba moved
past the Crusaders, 83-69.
Gardner-Webb ad
vanced to the cham
pionship game by beating
J.C. Smith, 86-81, and
Lenoir Rhyne nipped
Pfeiffer, 73-71, to also
advance.
The championship
game drew a slightly
smaller crowd than did
the previous evening
sessions due to the
uniqueness of seeing the
small college teams on
television according to
both Lenoir Rhyne coach
Bob Hodges and Bulldog
mentor Eddie Holbrook.
“We were very pleased
with the way the tour
nament turned out,’’ said
WBTV promotions
director Charlie Pittman.
“We learned a lot in
running it this year and
are looking forward to
improving it next year.’’
It was an event enjoyed
by all.
