Mr. Joseph Laderoute Promotes New College-Community Chorus April, 1976, Crossroads, Page 11 Mr. J.V. Laderoute, director of the Belmont Abbey College Com munity Chorus, sang at local churches in an effort to promote the chorus. These ap pearances will conclude a series of eight per formances in local churches recently where Mr. Laderoute has been invited also to speak to the congregations about the newly organized Chorus. Mr. Laderoute reports membership in the group has grown to over 60 members. He says, “Response has been most gratifying.” No auditions were necessary and there was no fee to join. All that was required is an ability to carry a tune. The chorus will give two joint performances with the Monroe Com munity Chorus. The first will be at the Belmont Abbey Cathedral on May 3 and then, a week later. May 10 at Wingate College. Among the works to be sung are “Schubert’s Mass in G”; “Cantique” by Gabriel Faure; Randall Thomp son’s “Alleluia”; and “Canticle of Praise” by Joseph Clokey. “My job is to enhance the cultural life of the area,” explained Mr. Laderoute. The chorus is the beginning of his ef forts. Besides the May 3rd concert, four other cultural events will take place in the near future. Also, the chorus is the beginning of plans to initiate a degree-granting program with a con centration in music. Depending on interest, a B.A. degree in music may be offered in the fall. Mr. Laderoute, the director, has had a distinguished musical career in the United States and Canada as a concert performer, opera singer and teacher. He was one of the award winners of the Metropolital Opera Auditions on the Air. A master of over one hundred opera and oratorio-choral works, Mr. Laderoute has performed as a soloist under the batons of Ar turo Toscanini, Serge Koussevitzky, Leonard Bernstein and many others. Joseph Victor Laderoute Trincheria, Farley to Lead SPE in ’76-77 The North Carolina Lambda Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Belmont Abbey College has recently held elections and installation of of ficers for the 1976-77 Executive Board. Joseph Trincheria, a David Abrahams Lectures at Belmont Abbey “Industrial Surface Active Agents - Their Chemistry and Textile Applications,” was the topic of a lecture delivered Thursday, February 12, at 8:30 p.m. in the Gaston Memorial Science Building Auditorium at Belmont Abbey College. The speaker was Mr. David Abrahams, who, as technical director of Dexter Chemical Cor poration, has been concerned with the development and ap plication of surface ac tive agents for many years. Dexter Chemical Manufactures sur factants of many types, and is particularly noted for work in the phosphate ester field. Abrahams received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in textile chemistry from Lowell Textile Institute ‘ Lowell, Massachusetts, where he later became a professor of organic chemistry in conjunction with teaching analytical chemistry at M.I.T. After his employment with Allied Chemical Corporation, Abrahams served in the U.S. Army chemical corps. Following his military service, Abrahams joined Dexter as head of the textile applications laboratory. Within 10 years he was appointed Chief Chemist and only a few years later was appointed to his present position as technical director. This lecture was part of the Introductory Textile Chemistry course offered at Belmont Abbey College for the benefit of supervisors in the textile chemical and finishing industry of Western North Carolina. The lecture was open to the public. junior from Phillipsburg, N.J., is the new president; Christopher Farley was elected to the vice-presidency; Charles Bishop was re-elected corresponding secretary; and Bartholomew Tur ner, the outgoing vice- president, was elected recorder. Robert Temple of Rich mond, Va., is the outgoing president and John Pulverenti of Hazlet, N.J., was last year’s recorder. Bob Arthur was ' selected as senior Inter- fraternity coumcil member and Carl Desmarais as the junior representative. Joseph Trincheria has been active in Rotaract Club, Abbey Players - the school’s thespian society, and the social committee of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He is a business administration major. Bart Turner from Mattituck, N.Y., a business administration major, served as vice- president of Sigma Phi Epsilon in 1975-76, while also involved with Rotaract and Abbey Players. Charles Bishop, who hails from Norfolk, Va., in his second term as secretary, is a biology major, and Chris Farley is also a business ad ministration major from Richmond, Va. Sigma Phi Epsilon, thirty-six brothers strong, celebrated its tenth anniversary last semester. In addition to class lectures, student groups receive in struction through demonstration manikins, films, and printed material. The eight hour course, which is being offered through the South Point Life Saving Crew, is being taught by Jim Gassen, a Freshman at Belmont Abbey College. Advanced First Aid, which is approved by the American Red Cross, is a course of instruction dealing with immediate treatment of fractures, abrasions, lacerations, and other common medical emergencies. Upon completion of the course the graduate will receive a certification which may be renewed at the end of three years.
