Mr. Joseph Laderoute Promotes
New College-Community Chorus
April, 1976, Crossroads, Page 11
Mr. J.V. Laderoute,
director of the Belmont
Abbey College Com
munity Chorus, sang at
local churches in an
effort to promote the
chorus. These ap
pearances will conclude a
series of eight per
formances in local
churches recently where
Mr. Laderoute has been
invited also to speak to
the congregations about
the newly organized
Chorus.
Mr. Laderoute reports
membership in the group
has grown to over 60
members. He says,
“Response has been most
gratifying.”
No auditions were
necessary and there was
no fee to join. All that
was required is an ability
to carry a tune.
The chorus will give
two joint performances
with the Monroe Com
munity Chorus. The first
will be at the Belmont
Abbey Cathedral on May
3 and then, a week later.
May 10 at Wingate
College. Among the
works to be sung are
“Schubert’s Mass in G”;
“Cantique” by Gabriel
Faure; Randall Thomp
son’s “Alleluia”; and
“Canticle of Praise” by
Joseph Clokey.
“My job is to enhance
the cultural life of the
area,” explained Mr.
Laderoute. The chorus is
the beginning of his ef
forts. Besides the May
3rd concert, four other
cultural events will take
place in the near future.
Also, the chorus is the
beginning of plans to
initiate a degree-granting
program with a con
centration in music.
Depending on interest, a
B.A. degree in music
may be offered in the fall.
Mr. Laderoute, the
director, has had a
distinguished musical
career in the United
States and Canada as a
concert performer, opera
singer and teacher. He
was one of the award
winners of the
Metropolital Opera
Auditions on the Air. A
master of over one
hundred opera and
oratorio-choral works,
Mr. Laderoute has
performed as a soloist
under the batons of Ar
turo Toscanini, Serge
Koussevitzky, Leonard
Bernstein and many
others.
