He still plays tennis. Carroll Thomas has been appointed Corporate Vice President of American lYedit Corporation in Charlotte. ’55 - Frank Miroshas his own medical supply business in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Bill Frain has been named .senior account representative for the fabrics division of Exxon Chemicals, U.S.A., and will be working with major accounts in the carpel industry. He and Pal live in Atlanta, where Bill is treasurer of Riverwood High .School Music Association, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Atlanta Men’s Lawn Tennis Association. ’57 -- ,A1 Taglieri is with Universal Oil Products Company at their World Headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois. ’58 -- En joyed the note on the Christmas card from Joe llerrity. He is a Major in the Army and is with the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group in Bangkok, Thailand. He and Becky have two children, Luann, sixteen, and David, eleven, and they are at Homestead AFB in Miami. In October 1977 they will be stationed at FI. Gordon, Georgia, for their terminal assignment, and Joe will retire in August 1979. ’60 - Frank .Schafstedde is with IBM in Raleigh. ’62 - Flynn Warren is completing the Ph.D. in Phar macy and will go to Saudi Arabia as a drug information specialist. Let us hear the details, Flynn. ’63 - Father .lames has received word from Brenda Gillespie lliisemann lhat her husband, Dick, has been promoted to Major in the USAF. They are stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, and have two children. Bo and Mary Margaret. '65 - Nancy Cunningham completed graduate studies at Emory University and is now a Certified Respiratory Therapist and a Certified Anesthetist at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Frank Dowgwilla is Executive Officer of the USS Blueback (SS-581) homeported in Hawaii, but he and Yoko will move to San Diego in March for a period of at least three years. Congratulations to Tommy Dunn on liis promotion to Assistant Vice President and Associate Legal Counsel of The Northwestern Bank in North Wilkesboro. N.C., where he and Mary Lou and their three children Jay, Michael, and Holly, live. Harvey Gregory has received the Mas'er’s degree after a year of school at Ft. Lee, Virginia. He and Pat have moved to Rock Island, Illinois where he will be utilizing his newly acquired knowledge. ’66 - Joseph O’Connell is with the State Department in Washington after spending 4V4 years in Brazil. He and his wife Stella and Joe III, five, and Andres, 19 months, live in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Donald Dufaux received the Doctor of Philosophy in commencement exercises at St. Louis University on May 8. His dissertation: “Personal Responsibility in Problem- Solving Counseling Groups: A Comparative Study of Two Methods and Locus of Control.” Congratulations! ’67 “ Barbara and Kerry Mahon and Kerry, Jr. have moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, and live in the country. Greg Wessel is credit manager and has responsibility for Sunset Magazine and Sunset Books. He and Karen have a contemporary townhouse con dominium in a planned community in Foster City, just south of San Francisco. Edward McGarry is in the real estate-insurance business in Tucson, Arizona. He is married and has one child. Tom Brennan is with Xerox in Marietta, Georgia, and hires college students for Xerox in Georgia. Thank you, Mrs. Shanley, for your letter giving us information on your son John Shanley. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Maryland in Sociology while teaching at the University, and then went on to receive the Master’s in Urban Planning from Catholic University in June, 1975. While at Catholic U he worked for a consulting firm in Belhesda, Maryland and taught at night at Maryland University. He and Susan Kofanty were married August 2, 1975, who is in her second year of Law School at Catholic U. John is working in the Community and Development Administration for Prince Georges County, Maryland and attending Law School at night at the University of Baltimore. Congratulations, John, and you and Susan have our best wishes. ’68 - Denis Deane is assistant principal of an elementary school in Bedford, Virginia. Bob Pogachnik is with Nationwide Insurance Co. and lives in Gainesville, Florida. Enjoyed the letter from Julio Nolla, which he wrote when he sent in his pledge to the Centennial Fund Campaign. He graduated from the School of Law of the Inter-American University and has been practicing law since mid-1974 with San Juan Legal Services, Inc., which is associated with the National Legal Aid for Defenders Association engaged in providing legal assistance to the indigent. ’69 - John Benito is an attorney in Tampa, Florida, in the same firm with Jimmy Caltagirone and Glenn Brown. Dennis DeRock is credit manager with Kay Jewelers in Atlanta and lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Richard Frick is with State Farm Insurance Co. and he and his wife Angela and their two children live in Rockville, Maryland. Phillip Maisano is with Equitable Life Insurance Co. and lives in Montvale, New Jersey. ’70 - John T. Farrell is in his third year of work on his Ph.D. and is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Delaware. Patricia Martin Holleman teaches in the Charlotte school system. ’71 - Don Anderson operates a hotel and motel supply company in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he and Vickie live. Paul Poschmann teaches and coaches tennis and soccer in Splitrock School in Syosset, New York. Tim Martin stopped by for a visit on January 4. He had just returned from two years in the Navy in Naples, Italy, and was on his way to Pensacola, where he will be for three months, and then three years in the Pentagon. He is a CTO-2 in the Navy and is thinking of making it a career. Tim told me that George Coombs is teaching in Philadelphia and taught for two years in Hong Kong. Chris Holland is working in Atlanta. They have two other children, Kelly and Jonathan. ’72 - Jeff Kamm is working for the Washington Coca- Cola Bottlers and he and Kathi live in Silver Spring, Maryland. They spent a year in Australia and would like to return. ’73 ~ Terry Ellison is Assistant Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Waynesboro, Virginia, where he and Kay live. James Bowen visited the Abbey the early part of January. He is a senior dental student at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Had an interesting letter from Tony Sessa dated December 7, 1976, reading in part: “I’m on my way to New Zealand. I’m part of a six-man crew sailing a single-masted 46’ sloop to Wanguan, N.Z. (home port). The journey is expected to take nine months to complete. We sail from Daytona December 13 from which we go to the West Indies. Our itinerary puts us in the Panama Canal Zone in late February or early March. From there we follow the spring and summer across the Pacific.” Be sure to write when you return, Tony. Tony Yeung, holder of the Archbishop Paul Yu-Pin scholarship during his Abbey. career and a magna cum laude B.S. graduate in Chemistry, has published an article “Structural Dif ferences between A-Paremyosin and B-Paramyosin of Mercenaria mercenaria” with R.W. Cowgill in Biochemistry 15, 4654-9 (1976). He is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Biochemistry in VPI. ’74 - It was good to see David Bowers when he stopped by on his way back to Loyola of New Orleans Law School from the Christmas break. We welcome Harry Creemers as Director of Public Relations and Alumni at the Abbey, who began working with us on January 10. Congratulations to Grace DiSanto who won third prize in The Arts Journal 1976 National Poetry Competition. ’76 - Gregory Hollingshead has been appointed an Administrative Assistant to Congressman Skip Bafalis of Florida, beginning in January, and he and June have moved to Washington. Congratulations to Bruce Milburn, who, at the first quarter at Hohnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, finished in the top 10 percent in Biochemistry, the upper one-third in Histology, and right in the middle with Gross Anatomy. Thanks for all the good things you say about the education you received at the Abbey, Bruce. It’s good to hear! James Michael Lineberger is attending the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he is in his first year of study toward the master of divinity degree. He is a four-year veteran of the Air Force. It was great talking to so many alumni during the Phon-a-thon, and you have our heartfelt thanks for your fantastic response and support. IN MEMORIAM Francis X. Dunn, Class of 1931 Abbey hosts second annual Cheerleader Clinic Belmont Abbey College January 14-16 hosted its second annual Cheerleader Clinic. A total of 110 girls attended the clinic in which 14 schools were represented. Denisa Riley, the clinic director, ter med the clinic a success. “I think everything went very well this year. The interest was much greater than last year. I was really pleased with the interest that was shown and the amount of things that were covered,” commented Ms. Riley. Dayna Witherspoon of the Wilson Jr. High Varsity squad was voted the Most' Valuable Cheerleader. Sarah Walters finished second and Susan Lavinder finished third in the MVC voting. Wilson Jr. High Varsity won the Most Valuable Squad award. Cherryville Jr. High finished second and Ashley Jr. High finished third in the voting. The most spirited Squad was the Kings Mountain High School squad. Quail Hollow Jr. High finished second and Township Three School finished third in that category. The combined squads got the opportunity to display their new skills during the half-time of the Belmont Abbey-Oglethorpe basketball game. “Right now, we are checking into the possibility of having a summer cheerleader camp,” said Ms. Riley. “It all depends on how much response to the idea that we have.” The Belmont Abbey cheerleaders were the in structors in the clinic.
