The Board of Trustees of Belmont Abbey College recently made a decision to grant visitation privileges in the College’s residence halls every Friday beginning August 26, 1977. Visitation hours will be 2 p.m. until 12 midnight. This new policy has been implemented by the Board as an experiment dependent upon further action of the Board of Trustees. In a recent letter to the student body, Fr. John P. Bradley, President of the College, stated, “It is my hope that our student body will make responsible use of the privilege, seeing to it that it will not be abused, so that I can be in the position of making a positive report to the Board when they require this.” The first steps toward renovation of the 96-year-old administration building were begun in late July. Standing structurally sound for almost a century, the building has housed dorm rooms, a cafeteria, “The Lost Colony,” classrooms, ad ministrative offices, and even living quarters for monastery guests. The building has sur vived all these with only minor repairs, but is now demanding some attention. The roof especially is in need of repairs, and deteriorated sections must be replaced before more damage is done through leakage. The labor is being done by Interstate Roofing, Charlotte, and the general contractor is D.C. Turner. “When they get through with the roof, it will be as good as when the building was built. I daresay it will last another hundred years,” commented of J.P. Smith, treasurer Belmont Abbey College. The initial projects include sandblasting the front door, constructing a new sidewalk on the portico of the main en trance, reflanging the copper on the fire walls, replacing slate tiles on the roof, and fixing the dormers and windows. The renovation is being handled on a first priority basis. Other projects will be started as additional funds become available.
