CEC)S§KCA[)S BdmonC Abbc^ College VOLUME VII NUMBER ONE BELMONT, N.C. OCTOBER 1978 First Annual Beach Weekend A Great Success! The First Annual Belmont Abbey College Alumni Beach Weekend was held Sept. 22, 23 and 24 in Virginia Beach. The Holiday Inn on 39th Street was headquarters for the festivities. Several alumni and guests enjoyed the warm sunshine on Friday. A welcome cocktail party was held Friday evening, and the group dined at different places following the party. Cool weather curtailed the “fun in the sun” activities Saturday afternoon. However, being typical Abbey alumni, the group attended an Octoberfest which was part of Virginia Beach’s annual festival. The group then proceeded to a local pub for lunch and an afternoon of comradery. Saturday evening’s events were tipped off with a cocktail party in the Seaside Room. A delicious banquet followed in the convention center. Bill Drinkwater (’67), chairman of the beach weekend committee, introduced alumni director Jay Briody who updated the alumni and reported to the group the activities of other alumni chapters. Paul Kieman (’73) and his wife Margaret won the award for coming the furtherest. The Kiernans traveled from Long Island to attend the weekend. Bob DeMuro (’73) and his wife Chris traveled from New Jersey. Most of the group came from the Tidewater area, Rich mond and Washington. Fr. Neil Tobin received a standing ovation from the fifty banquet attenders prior to his address. Also attending from the College were Dr. Patrick Lee, academic dean, Brother Gregory Corcoran, O.S.B., assistant to the president, and Miss Jane Shannon, admissions counselor. A dance followed the banquet as the alumni and friends continued to party well into the night. Sunday morning brought (Continued on Page 3) Alumni Challenged With $40,000 Increase For the first time in the 102- year history of Belmont Abbey College, alumni have been challenged to increase or begin anew their contribution to the College. Two friends of the College, both members of the Board of Advisors who never attended school here, have decided to challenge all alumni. Realizing the need for increased alumni support to the Annual Fund, they have graciously agreed to match on a dollar-for-dollar basis, all new and increased alumni gifts to the 1978-79 Annual Fund. This means that alumni who did not contribute to the College last year will have their entire gifts to the 1978-79 Annual Fund matched, while those who increase their gifts to the Annual Fund this year will have the amount of the increase matched. The challengers will also match new and increased gifts from matching gift companies. For example, a gift of $10 from an alumnus who did not contribute last year will be Charlotte-Meek Alumns Elect Officers The Charlotte - Mecklenburg j Alumni Association held elections of officers at its recent meeting on Oct. 4, 1978. Tom Amann (’74), an ac countant with Personal Money Management, Inc., was elected president. Elected to the position of vice president was Richard Vitolo (’70), who is with Northwestern Advisory Corp. Tibbs Harris (’72), who is with Borg Warner Acceptance Corp., was elected secretary. Rich Guicheteau (’72) was elected treasurer. Rich is with First Union National Bank. Amann replaces Bob Healy (’68), who served as president since the inception of the chapter in 1976. The association will also be involved with the College’s alumni weekend, a Career Day for seniors, a couples’ retreat and a golf tournament. The association, which has seen an increase in involvement by alumni, discussed several ways to encourage participation from other alumni not yet in volved. If you are interested in becoming involved in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg Alumni Association, contact one of the officers or Jay Briody, alumni director at the College. ••I, ■iMOifr ' I* Is Early arrivals at the beach include (left to right) Fr. Furthermore, if that same alumnus works for a matching gift company which also con tributes $10, the challengers will match both the alumnus’ and the company’s gift for a total gift of $40. On a higher scale, if an alumnus who did not contribute to the 1977-78 Annual Fund gives $500, the gift will be matched by the challengers for a total of $1,000. If that person works for a matching gift company, his gift of $500 will actually net $2,000 for the College. On the other hand, if an alumnus who gave $25 last year increases his gift to $50 this year, his increase of $25 will be matched by the challengers and the $50 gift will net $75 for the College. If that alumnus works for a matching gift company, the challengers will match both the company’s increased gift and that of the alumnus for a total gift of $150 to the Annual Fund. The generosity of these two loyal friends is an outstanding example of their commitment to Belmont Abbey College. They are giving the alumni a marvelous opportunity to secure for Belmont Abbey College $80,000 in completely new funds for use in making our fine College even more out standing. The challenge has been issued; now it is up to the alumni to show that they can meet it. Attention Former BAG B.B.
