A workshop in “The Hidden
Values of Professional Selling”
was presented on Sept. 18 in the
Abbot Vincent Taylor Library
Auditorium of Belmont Abbey
College. The workshop was
conducted by representatives of
the Material Handling
Equipment Distributors
Association (MHEDA).
MHEDA, an international
organization headquartered in
Deerfield, 111., is comprised of
700 member companies in
cluding distributors, factory-
owned branches, manufac
turers and associate members.
The association is dedicated to
improving the efficiency and
effectiveness of its member
companies.
Approximately 65 persons
attended the afternoon session
presented by four sales-oriented
executives. Each of '„he
speakers emphasized the im
portance of professional selling
as a background for top level
management positions.
Daniel R. Reilly, executive
director of MHEDA for the past
nine years, set the stage for the
program with personal com
ments on the importance of
selling for effectiveness across
a wide range of life roles and
management responsibilities.
He introduced each of the three
speakers, all presidents of their
own companies and all with
selling backgrounds.
John J. Boyle, Jr., president
of Lewis-Boyle, Inc., Waltham,
Mass., discussed the “Unique
Advantages of a Sales
Background in Distribution Top
Management.” “A professional
salesman and a top level
executive must have the same
three qualities to be suc
cessful,” said Boyle. “A person
in either position must possess
the ability to think straight,
people ability and courage,” he
continued.
Mitchell T. Milovich,
president of Life Atlanta, Inc.,
Decatur, Ga., addressed the
group on “The Buyer’s Ex
pectation of a Professional
Salesperson.” With experience
on both sides of the buyer-seller
desk, Milovich outlined the
importance of a buyer’s “people
sense,” and emphasized the
importance of the individual
salesperson’s potential for
providing new ideas and con
cepts to the buyer’s problems.
William K. Slife, president of
Slife Industrial Trucks,
Columbus, Ohio, spoke on the
“Criterion for Selection and
Success in Capital Goods
Selling.” He presented a look at
the salesperson from the inside
out: his motivations, styles
and feelings. “A good
salesperson must possess
knowledge, skill, and a positive
attitude,” concluded Slife.
Belmont Abbey College is the
only four-year liberal arts
college in the U.S. to offer an
undergraduate degree in
distribution management. Dr.
William M. Kirk, chairman of
the department of economics
and business at the College,
heads up the program.
MHEDA worked closely with
the College in developing this
program and continues to
support it with the particular
facets of material handling
equipment. George L. Wrenn,
president of Wrenn Brothers
Carolina, Inc., Charlotte, and
member of the Belmont Abbey
College Board of Trustees, also
plays an important part in the
program.
Ple^e Help Us Update Our Alumni List
You will notice below an expanded form which requests information we would like to keep our
records updated. There is a sincere desire within several departments to evaluate and seek to
improve the quality of instruction and career preparation. There is also a renewed effort to in
volve alumni in greater numbers. Finally there is the hope that we can effectively organize a
Belmont Abbey Alumni Association as a working arm of the College, as well as a resource for its
members. We cannot refrain from adding that we sincerely hope the response to this plea through
“Crossroads” will be better than ever. We are eager to serve you.
