Crutchfield was educated in the public- schools of Spartanburg, South (Carolina, and at Wofford College m that same citv. He started his career in broadcasting in 1929. at the age of 1 7. as an announcer and program director of various radio sta tions in North and South Carolina. In 19.11. he married Jaecjuelin Williams, and is the father ol one son. Richard, and one daughter. l.eslie. In 1933. (;harles C!rutchf'ield began his associamm with Radio Station W BT which became ihc flagship station of the Jefferson Standard Broadcasting Compans. and still later the Jefferson Pilot Broadca,stmg Omipany. He rose from amiounccr to program director, general manager. Vice President.. Lxccutivc Vice President, and finally President from 1963 to 1978. Me continues to be active in the profession as President of Media (ioinmunications, Inc. A charter member in the North (Carolina Broadcasting Mall of l ame, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the North Carti lina Association of Hroadcasiers in 1977. Chancellor of Duke University, is an eminent jurist, teacher, lecturer, and educational leader. Born in 1931. in New York Citv. he attended primary and secondary schools in Virginia. South Carolina, and New York. He concluded his undergraduate career ar the Uiiiversiiv of Buffalo by receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts summaaim laude in 1951. The brilliant vounu Phi Beta Kappa scholar obtained his legal education at (Georgetown University where he earned the de grees of Juris Doctor in 1953. and Master of Laws in 1955.
