Page 2-CROSSROADS-August 1979 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Professors across the nation have observed a decline in college students’ ability to express themselves; this trend is verified in the steadily declining SAT and ACT scores of applicants to our nation’s colleges. Belmont Abbey College shares in I hat national trend and, may I assure you, it concerns all of us here. During last academic year Dr. J. Patrick Lee, Academic Dean, and the Academic Affairs Commit-' ;ee studied our curriculum in light of this national trend and proposed changes in the curriculum and in the requirements for graduation, which were subse- quenily approved by the Faculty, myself, and the Trustees. To qualify for the Bachelor’s degree, all siudcms entering in the fall of 1979 will be required to dem.uistrate effective communication in critical reading, in critical thinking, in oral expression, and in written expression. Most of our students will fulfill this requirement through the following courses: 1. College Reading, which will develop reading skills v\ ill special emphasis on vocabulary, analysis, and comprehension. 2. Critical Thinking: Basic Logic, which will study the various uses of language, good grounds for thought and action, sound and unsound arguments, logical consequences and logical proof. 3. Effective Speech, which includes the principles of public speaking, voice and speech improvement, analysis of model speeches, and oral interpretation. 4. English Grammar and Composition, which is' being expanded from a one to two-semester course. These communication courses wilT total fifteen: credits. Some of our freshmen who have excelled in high ■ school will demonstrate competency in the various areas of communication through a program of testing during orientation; these students will receive credit, up to a maximum of fifteen. In order to accom- FATHER NEIL W. TOBIN modate the additional requirements in the com munication core, graduates of Belmont Abbey Col lege will be required to earn 130 credits, an increase of ten. Curriculum trends in general education across the nation are moving away from the academic smorgasbord of the last decade toward a more struc tured curriculum in general education, though less structured than the curriculum of the forties and fif ties. Our College will join some prestigious institu tions in that trend. In the Division of Humanities re quired courses will include Introduction to Literature, another literature course, two courses in philosophy, two in theology, and two other humanities courses from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages, and Literatures. In the Division of Social Sciences six credits in the Survey of Civilization will be required as well as two other courses in social sciences. In the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences requirements will be two science courses of which one must be a laboratory course. College Algebra, as well as one other mathematics course (Advanced College Algebra, Trigonometry, Mathematics for Business and Economics, or Mathematics for Non-Science Majors). There will be fifty required credits in the general education com ponent of the curriculum. The area of major concentration will be continued. The remaining of the 130 credits will be elective. I am pleased with these curricular developments at our College. Our graduates will be well trained in the basics-the kind of education that has brought renown to Belmont Abbey College for a century. Our curriculum changes were recently highlighted in The Charlotte Observer in an article, “Haryard Unveils Drastic Change Toward Highly Specific Courses.” And so Belmont Abbey College quietly continues the Benedictine tradition which we have inherited from the monastic schools of Europe.
