7457 NAMES LISTED IN CITY; 2 MORE REPORTS TO COME 94.3% Of Census For 1930 Listed In Second District 6 census enumerators in Roanoke Rapids have turned in 7457 names for the city at this time, according to information received here today sional District. Two more enumera from A. M. Atkinson, Census su pervisor of the Second Congres tors are still working in their dis tricts within the city and have not yet turned in their lists of names. An average of 1236 names have been turned in from the six com pleted districts here. The highest totaled 1739, while the lowest show ed only 764. There is a possibility that the two enumerators who have yet to make their reports will have larger totals than any of those turn ed in, in that their work is requir ing a greater lengthof time. Mr. At kinson said that he believed that a complete report on the city would be available by the next issue of tVi £ no nor The supervisor stated that his 35th daily report showed that 94.3 per cent of the population in 1930 had been enumerated at this time. The 1930 census showed the Second District had a population of 276,795. At the present 261,196 have been enumerated. Total number of faipns enumerat ed thus far is 23,433; houses, 57,107. As soon as the remaining enume rators turn in the names from their districts within the city, Mr. Atkin son said that he would come to Roanoke Rapids and make a com plete check up through the books in the city hall to determine whether all names had been turn ed in. Seventeen Cases At Recorders James L. Newsome, charged with driving car drunk, not guilty. James Johnston and Kenneth Dunston, col. of Littleton, charged with assault on Charles Laney. De fendant Dunston not guilty—Johns ton to pay costs and $20 for use of Charles Laney. Robert Letsinger, col. of Scot land Neck, charged with assault, was found not guilty by the jury. J. T. Hubbard, white of Virginia, was fined $50 and costs. License revoked for 12 months for driving while under the influence of liquor. Levy Patterson, col. of Weldon, charged with having liquor in his possession; nol pros with leave. Henry Whitaker, col. of Hob good, was found guilty of illegal possession of liquor and given 6 months roads suspended on pay ment of costs. John L. Langley, white of Roa noke Rapids, charged with non support, was placed on probation for two vears. Charlie Hux, col. of Halifax, was found not guilty of driving car while drunk. W. A. Fox, white of Scotland Neck, was found guilty of assault and placed on probation for two years. Rom Sherrod, white of Peters burg, reckless driving. Prayer for judgment continued on payment of the costs and good behavior for 12 months. License revoked for 12 months. Calvin Lewis, white of Enfield, reckless driving. Prayer for judg ment continued on payment of costs and good behavior for 12 months and voluntarily surrenders his operator’s license for 12 months. Elmore Pitchford, col. of ^Veldon, charged with assault. Prayer for judgment continued on payment of costs and $5 for use of Maud By num. Frank Miller, col. of Weldon, fin ed $5 and costs for assault. William Drunfold, col. of Roa noke Rapids, fined $10 and costs for assault. James Putney, col. of Roanoke Rapids, fined $50 and costs. Li cense revoked for 12 months for driving car drunk. Herbert Powell, col. of Roanoke Rapids, prayer for judgment con tinued on payment costs. License revoked for 12 months for reckless driving. Mrs. Ransom Hostess The Contract Club had a most delightful meeting with Mrs. P. E. Ransom at her lovely home on the Weldon Road. Immediately after the arrival of the guests, they were invited in the dining room and a most refreshing punch was enjoy ed. Bridge was then enjoyed until five o’clock when the scores were added. Mrs. Lyle Wilson was found to hold the highest score and was presented an attractive prize. Strawberries and cream were serv ed for refreshments. Throughout the house a lovely arrangement of flowers added beauty to the oc casion. Those playing were: Mes dames Frank Williams, W. S. Dean, T. J. Alford, Frank Wilson, Pendle ton Grizzard, Lyle Wilson, J. M. C. Covington and W. S. Scott of Wel don. ENDORSE 3rd TERM ELECT DELEGATES TO CONVENTION The Halifax County Democratic convention in session assembled in Halifax on May 11 adopted a reso lution binding its 44 delegates to the State Democratic convention Friday, May 17, to vote for Frank lin D. Roosevelt for renomination so long as his name was before the convention. The convention, at tended by about 250 delegates from the precincts, was for the most part harmonious. The resolution endorsing President Roosevelt was approved after a substitute reso lution which would have sent the delegates uninstructed hart been defeated. Those who fa vored the substitute resolution however, made it clear they ap proved of President Roosevelt’! policies. Dr. B. M. Nicholson of Enfielc was reelected county chairman a< a meeting of the county executive committee which was held imme Jdiately after the convention ad journed.
