page 4 FALL SPORTS TEAMS IMPROVE RECORDS VOLLEYBALL The girl°s volleyball team this year showed a marked improvement over last year°s 0-9 record, finishing the season with a record of five wins and eight losses. The team°s victories included a win over Cresset in its opener, as well as victories over Durham High , Vance Academy, West Johnson and Cardinal Gibbons. The girls® defeats included two losses to Hale and two losses to the N.C. School of the Deaf. They also lost to Durham High, Wallace Oneil, Hill side and Vance Academy. The players for this year°s team were Lucy Adair, Karen Burgin, Tiffany Davis, Susan Dickson, Mary Justice, Melissa Jones, Karla Mitchell, Anja Patton, Kimberly Thompson and Greta Watts. Other members were Felicia Washington, storekeeper, Margaret Butler, team assistant; Cynthia Gill, team assistant; and Pamela Whiting, line judge. \TJf, mi \' V V >rJ% I \ Meyer swings into action. GIRLS’ TENNIS The NCSSM girls® tennis team placed eleventh in the district this season with a record of four wins and six losses. The team, coached by Bob Cox, won both of its matches against Orange High, also defeating Durham High and winning by forfeit its match with Hillside. •The girls lost their matches against Durham Academy, Ravenscroft, Jordan, and Southern and were defeated in both their matches with Cardinal Gibbons. The team®s members, in order of seed, were Adrienne Gore, Staci Barfield, Amy Sturkey, Wanda Anderson, Laura Meyer and Beth Bailey. Unseeded members of the team were Diane Barber and Dolores Heriquez. 0 I, * I' ^ . Teamwork of Verghese and Nguyen leads offensive attack. Soccer team captures second place This year s boys® soccer team showed a marked improvement over last year®s 1-9 team, placing second in the conference with a record of seven wins and three losses. The team, coached by Kevin Bartkovich, opened its season with four straight wins but was shut out 4-0 in its fifth game by Chapel Hill. The Unicorns then bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Vance only to fall to the same team in their next match with a 6-1 loss. They won their next two games and closed out the season with a repeat of their earlier 4-0 loss to Chapel Hill. CRCSS CCUNTRY At district competition this year, the girls® cross country team placed third and the boys® team placed twenty-first out of 38 entries. The girls also did well at the city/county Invitational meet, placing second out of eight teams. The boys did not fare as well, ending up in seventh place. Both teams were coached by Branson Brown. The girl runners, by rank, were Jennie Woosley, Sharon Oxendine, Helen Moore, Meg Gatling and Maureen Coyle. The boys® team, by rank, consisted of Louis Gordon, Stephen Crain, Kevin Lutz, Steve Harmon, David Gray, Shawn Graham, David Malin and Brett Brackett. Also on the boys® team were Randy Kolb, Yessic Spencer and David Thiel. Team members included Andy Baxter, Keith Burton, Will Carr, Mark Chandler, Ho Cho, Bill Fox, Bryan Giles, Brian Harry, Mark Harkins, Fred Indermaur, Nate Miranda and Bihn Nguyen. Also on the roster were Lihn Nguyen, Tihn Nguyen, Tim Porter, Hooman Sabeti, Will Sneden, Bill Thompson, Warren Stephens, Simon Verghese and Carlton Zdanski. runn nezLERs by Hooman Sabeti 1. GYM PLANNING BEGINS NCSSM soon will hire architects to draw up blueprints for a gymnasium which will be located in the laundry building. Additions will be made to the existing building to house the gymnasium complex. Facilities will include locker rooms, a weight and gymnastics room, and basketball and racquetball courts. In addition to the gymnasium, the complex will house offices for the Student Activities Board and Intramurals, as well as a dance studio and a lounge/recreation area. The date on which construction will begin has not yet been set and Is contingent on funding. xhe committee responsible for planning the gymnasium complex is chaired by Jim Litle. Committee members include Dean Michael Collins, Dan Teague, Rufus Owens, Don Houpe,! Ama Shabazz, Branson Brown and Braughn Taylor. Student representatives to the committee are Steve Harmon, Cathy Moses and Lisa Swaim.
