Page 4 November 9,1987 Soccer Finishes 2nd by Shane Hutson The NCSSM men’s soc cer team was once again con tending for the conference title. The Unicorns have posted a 9-4 record thus far Into the season and are 9-1 in conference play with their only conference loss coming at the hands of rival Apex, This year’s team has put together its winning ways through a combination of exceptional teamwork and outstanding Individual talent." The soccer team has demonstrated this ability in several games this year. Against Harnett-Central, the men’s soccer team was down 2-0 at the half and came back to win 6-3. Then, at Wake Forest, the Unicorns pulled off a 3-2 come from behind win show ing a 'never say die’ at titude. Coach Bartkovitch also cited the Durham Academy game as an important dis play of this team’s character, After coming off a loss at Apex, the Unicorns played with a lack of intensity in losing to a mediocre Durham Academy team, 1-0. "We reached a turning point in the D,A. game. It shook us up." Although it was an humiliating loss, the team pulled together afterwards and began to play their best. According to Coach Bartkovitch, it has been this togetherness that has been the key to the team’s suc cess. Since the beginning of the season, the soccer team has progressed towards the level of teamwork that it now enjoys. However, the Unicorns also owe much of their success to excellent depth on the bench and to some quite exceptional in dividual talent. Coach Bartkovitch cited two much improved players as impor tant facets of this year’s team, Sean O’Brien, who has developed into an excel lent scorer and is leading the team in goals scored, and Jon McIWurry, who has become a consistent goal keeper for the Unicorns and has had six shutouts at this point in the season. The Unicorns continued to pull together as a team in their final regular season game against Apex. It was a well-fought contest in which NCSSM won, 2-1. With that win the men’s soc cer team finished first in the conference. This first place finish allowed the Unicorns to gain a bye in the first round of the con ference tournament. Then in the semifinals the soccer team met a much-improved Wake Forest-Rolesville team. After regulation play and an overtime the two teams ware deadlocked in a 2-2 tie and the game had to con troversially be called on ac count of darkness. The next day NCSSM again played Wake Forest- Rolesville and this time soundly defeated them, 3-0. This assured the Unicorns of a state playoff berth and a win in the conference tour nament finals against Apex would assure the home field advantage up to the semi finals in the state. However, after two forty minute hal ves and two ten minute overtimes NCSSM and Apex were in a scoreless tie, so Runners End Productive Season by David Cherry The Boys’ and Girls’ Cross-Country Teams dominated the conference com petition despite the many in juries suffered on both teams. During the season the boys’ team, led by Steve George, Jon Davis, and Trip Jones, went undefeated in conference competition. They also faced stiff competition at the City-County Invitation al at Durham Academy, The girls’ team, led by Rachel Ward, Sherri Sim mons, and Tracy Webster, also did well in the con ference. Sherri Simmons and Tracy Webster were chosen for the City-County team. "We have had a very competitive season team wise and individual-wise. We had several major in juries to returning seniors. Those, injuries could have made the difference between our 18-4 record and 22-0 record," said the boys’ head coach. Coach Mc- Dougald, The team’s top run ner, Steve George, finished on the City-County team at the City-County Invitational, Co-captalns Jon Davis and Trip Jones consistently finished in the top of the conference. Co-captain Todd Ashe’s feelings on the several injuries to team were, "I made it through the season without getting hurt". The boys’ team also had many new juniors. "We are for one reason: to win and to go home and study," was Howard Weeks' quotation from Coach Mc- Dougald about the season. The girls’ team also had a great year, "We had the best quality squad we ever. This means that the men’s soccer team must travel to Swansboro for their first round match in the state playoffs. With another team, Clayton High School, added to the conference, there were five teams con tending for the conference title. Although NCSSM did not become the conference champs, they did finish second in the conference. The two losses were to Fu- quay Varina, the conference champions. This year’s team was led by two returning seniors: Lisa Walbolt, first seed; and Elizabeth Cross, second seed. Both Walbolt and Cross had only one loss each for their singles re cords. These two girls gave their all during matches and at practice. Being good role models for the rest of the team, they gave advice and coaching tips to help their teammates The team had a definite advantage of senior leader ship, not only from Walbolt and Cross, but from the other seniors, as well. Two other returning seniors, Jenny Goodall and Kim Lutz, along with the other seniors; Laura Bassett, Donna Brannock, Anne George, Alicia Rios, and Rae Lynn Yates, added a lot to the team leadership and spirit. Another advantage the tennis team was experience. Although there were only four returning players, most of the team members, includ ing the two juniors. Jayashiri Ghate and Beth Krodel, had played on a ten nis team before. This meant that the majority of the girls knew the fundamentals of the game; they just had to prac tice these fundamentals. And. practice was just what they did every weekday, ex cept game days, for about two hours a day. These prac tices, which were held at Whlpoorwlll Park in Dur ham, consisted of running, hitting, and playing chal lenge matches for seeded posi tions. Evidently, the senior leadership, experience, and practice paid off, because it all tied together resulting in a winning season for the lady netters.
