Anthony Ellis, the new coach arriving from the island coun try of Cypress, is knowledge able and experienced. Captains Ray Throop and Eric Gonzalez are skillful and committed, and provide great senior leadership. Another addition is assistant Dane Barret, who has club experi ence and also helps with the coaching and conditioning. "It's a whole lot different from last year; we have the skill, but we need to work as a team," says Eric Gonzalez. Captain Ray Throop com ments, "We have lots of poten tial and good work ethic. Fitness is the most important thing we need to. work on." Seniors standouts include Ray Throop, Eric Gonzalez, Christian Reuter, Kevin Miller, Jason Radford, and Carter Brockman. Juniors hoping to make an impact are midfielders Fulton Forde and Alex Whitworth. The Unicorns' current record is 1-2 with losses to Chapel Hill High School and Durham School of the Arts. A punishing 6-0 win against Carolina Friends is a positive step for the team. The Unis look forward to continuing the step toward a positive future. Mandy McDermott Seniors Brian Phelps and Christian Reuter take a quick break dur ing their soccer game. S enior Amanda Haines has been tearing up the tennis courts. A promi nent player for NCSSM's women's tennis . team, she hails from Eden, North Carolina. Enjoying a solid United States Tennis Association record of 9-1, she is also 1-0 for NCSSM thus far, playing the number 1 spot for both singles and doubles. Amanda, a Second Beall girl, is not only an avid tennis play er, but also enjoys playing soccer. With excellent ability, passion, and talent, Amanda Haines will look to lead the Uni's women's tennis team throughout the year.
