Aneesh Kulkarni N early everyone at NCSSM belongs to some club, whether it’s the Cheese Club, the Stentorian (which you are reading right now), or some other activity of interest. On August 21, the annual Club Fair will take place in the Student Center courtyard, and I encourage everyone, espe cially juniors, to attend. Without further ado, here is a sampling of the clubs you will find: The Stentorian: This is the school’s student-run newspa per, published monthly (usual ly). The Stentorian is always in need of good writers, so if Journalism appeals to you, give it a try and write a Stentorian article. Asian Cultures Club: ACC is the largest club at school (at least it claims to be). The club engages in a variety of activi ties that celebrate Asian cul tures, including the annual AsiaFest in the spring. You don’t need to be Asian to join! NSBE: NSBE, the National Society of Black Engineers is a world-wide engineering organization that welcomes all interested persons regardless of race or intended major. By joining and participating in club functions, you will not only learn about the sciences, but also about how to handle yourself in a business setting. Blue Mirror: The Blue Mirror - Arts and Literary Magazine - provides the opportunity for publication of the works of talented NCSSM artists, writ ers, and composers. The Blue Mirror staff consists of a group of students who will review the submissions to select those that are qualified for publication. Math Club: This is for anyone who enjoys working on inter esting and challenging math problems. You also get to work with our awesome math faculty. Academic Team: The Academic Team participates in local Quiz Bowl and other competitions (and usually does pretty well). Anyone who enjoys or has a talent in academic fields should con sider joining. WorldQuest: This is for any one with an interest in current events, geography, history, and world affairs. Science Olympiad: The SO Team participates in the regional SO competition, where they compete in various events like Chemistry Lab, Science of Fitness, and Tower Building. Many other clubs will also be at the club fair. If there's not one for you, then start your own! Out of the Bubble Agata Pelka W hen NCSSM stu dents are tired of cafeteria food, these are a few of the places that they run to. On 9th St.: Cosmic Cantina: Most likely the first place sen iors will recom mend because of the cheap, delicious Mexican food and the quaint terrace outside. Elmo’s Diner: - . ' This diner is ' *■" another school favorite and serves breakfast around the clock. Brueggers Bagels: Sometimes it’s worth a walk to the end of 9th street for a fresh bagel. Charlie s: This restaurant is used fre quently by middle aged bikers but makes for a good meal. Ca/e at the Regulator: A great place to work, drink coffee, and munch on huge cookies. Georges Garage: This restaurant has a pretty affordable market that sells some of the pricier items on the menu such as sushi and seafood. Bahn s Cuisine: Vietnamese and Chinese fast food is served Monday through Friday, and on Saturday, the owners offer Vietnamese home cooking. Francesca's Desert Cafe: This cafe carries amazing homemade ice cream and gelatos in some 200 rotating flavors along with coffee and pastries. It’s always worth a peek to see what flavors are avail able. They also have live music every once in a while and offer a nice environment to work Bali Hai: A mongolian grill where you order ;■ '„by the bowl and Melissa Myotte^A as much of the meats and veggies in as possible. Then you pick one of the special sauces and watch as a chef cooks it on a huge circular grill. Served with rice, this meal is definit- ley worth the price if you ar? good at engineering structures COME JOIN! sten-to-ri-an (adj.): 1. Although NCSSM does not have a football team like most traditional high schools, it does offer a wide variety of sports for talent ed athletes. Fall sports include women’s tennis, men’s soccer, vol leyball, cheerlead ing and cross coun try. Although this is a school for sciencej and math, our ath-j^ ij letic teams do impress us every now and then. Our cross country team is one of the best in the state and all our teams make impressive showings in made of food. International Delight: Famous for its Mediterranean food, this small diner offers lamb, gyros, and homemade desserts like baklava but no ketchup. Around Whole Foods: Eno Cafe: Located in Whole Foods it offers a variety of organic food. Mad Hatters Cafe and Bake Fall Sports their divisions. Team spirit is strong at NCSSM, and fans have been known to paint themselves blue and to scream so loud that they are kicked out of the gym. Juniors are Shop: A great place to grab a sand wich and dessert. Ben and Jerry s: A frequent stop for students, Ben and Jerry’s carries 40 fla vors and the comfort of a chain name. Students also order Chinese from Dragon Gate, pizza from Domino’s or Randy’s and subs from Jimmy John’s. encouraged to get involved in sports and create bonds that only teammates who have suf fered loss and triumph can have. Tryouts for all sports begin Wednesday August 18th. If a varsity sport is not for you, then participate in intramurals. Halls compete against each other in soccer, volleyball, baimer making and basketball to win the Director’s Cup and the right to gloat for a year. Rivalries run ram pant and hall spirit soars. After tough competition and somewhat rough games, last year’s 1 Winners were 4th '-A-Glance Bryan and 3rd East. But 2004 marks a new year and all’s fair in love and intramurals.
