Volleyball team expects to reach far
BY Margaret Yim
P roving wrong the thought
that NCSSM sports are
lacking compared to other
schools, the women’s volleyball
team has the confidence that
they can be one of the top three
teams in the conference this
season. What makes them so
sure that they have what it takes
to be competitive in the TISAC,
our athletic conference? From
the comments of coaches and
players, they seem to be headed
in the right direction.
The volleyball season
started with 3 grueling days of
tryouts that ended with a
difficult choice for the coaches.
“There were so many talented
players that it made the cut very
hard, but we felt that we made
the right decisions,”
commented Sue Anne Lewis,
Assistant Coach and SLI. In
exchange for a tough choice,
however, the team has 10 gifted
players with a lot of game. The
team is led by Head Coach
Davene Mainwaring and
Assistant Coach Lewis, as well
as by senior co-captains Molly
Cline and Chelsea Nielsen.
Other players include senior
Hailey Loftis and juniors Amy
Bryson, Caitlin Frese, Ishita
Gandi, Rose Guo, Kaitlin Icard,
Lisa Pepin, and Rachel Revelle.
The team is managed by seniors
Heather Ferguson and Jina Kim.
The competitive nature of
the team has shown itself in all
of the games that they have
played so far, and it’s obvious
that they have what it takes to
reach great heights. “I think that
this year’s team has the
complete package: passing,
setting, hitting, and most
importantly, the will to win,”
praised Lewis. In their recent
game against Durham School of
the Arts, they proved
themselves, beating the
Bulldogs in three straight sets.
Their consistent serving and
accurate passes led the way to
their second straight win, and
their ability to make smart
decisions on the court has
helped them as well.
Since those wins, the Uni’s
have been playing in a stretch
of away games, in which they
have sorely missed their
supporting fans, in addition to
having to cope with an injured
player. However, the
communication and bond that
the team shares have made it
so that even though some
players are in positions that
they have never played before,
the team is still going strong.
Lewis does profess to some
flaws.
“Our biggest weakness is
that we get down on ourselves
after the other team gets ahead
of us. The past two games,
we’ve faced the problem of
getting behind in a set and not
being able to catch back up,”
Lewis said.
Despite these setbacks, the
team still believes that there are
good times to come. “We’ve
come such a long way since the
first day of practice. I see us
becoming more of a team every
minute we’re together on the
court. If we keep working like
we have been we’re going to
be unstoppable,” said junior
I^itlin Icard.
Co-Captain Chelsea Nielson
said, “I know I’m going to have
great memories to look back on
and I’ll be missing it next year
when I’m in college!”

Athletes focus on the ball while playing intramural soccer.
Intramural soccer dominates
it
stress and build hall
camaraderie. They are also
outrageous. I’ve seen banners
and kids with their faces and
bodies painted.”
The holy grail of the
intramural world is the
President’s Cup. This cup is
given at the end of the year to
the male and female halls with
the highest amount of points
for all intramural sports. The
elusive point system used at
NCSSM is mostly dependant
on participation. While a hall
can earn five points for winning
a game, it can earn up to thirty
for participation. So, having the
whole hall out there to play will
aid it’s chances to win the Cup.
The brunt of the work of IM
organization falls on Gonyeau
having to prepare matches
eveiy week for the 20 halls. But,
he is not complaining. “I love
it,” he says, “I love being
around kids, and I love being
around sports.” Even his
farewell was, “See you on his
IM field!”
V arsity sports can be
found at any old high
school. NCSSM,
however, also offers students a
different kind of sporting
activity: intramurals.
Intramurals are sports in
which the competition is only
with other students at NCSSM.
Students are divided into teams
based on which hall they live
on, and each week games are
held on the athletic fields
behind the school. IM soccer
games take place on a half-sized
soccer field, with seven players
from each team/hall playing on
the field.at one time. Lasting a
half hour each, they tend to
serve more as stress-relievers
and socigl activities than actual
competitive events.
Brian Gonyeau, coordinator
of the intramural program, feels
that intramurals are an integral
part of student life. “Intramurals
are for participation and fun,”
says Gonyeau, “They relieve
NCSSM Trivia Challenge
Compiled by May Liu and Margaret Yim
For those of you who don’t know, the NCSSM Trivia Challenge is an ongoing contest between the faculty and students of NCSSM. Each month,
four lucky people (2 faculty and 2 students) will be asked the same set of four trivia questions. Their answers and comments will be published in that
month’s Stentorian and the correct answers will be tallied up. At the end of the year, we see who is ultimately the most trivia-aware; faculty or students?
If you would like to submit your own questions, please email us at lium@,ncssm.edu or yimm@ncssm.edu.
