THE STENTORIAN INCSSM OCTOBER 2(X)7 Mini-term Page 5 Mini-term 2007-2008: What will you do this year? For those of you who have yet to decide on a mini-term, this weeklong opportunity allows students to focus on just one item for study, as well as to relax a little. There are traveling and non-travelling mini-tenns. : Here, are a selection of mini-terms that are being olFered. Be careful to make sike that what interests you is still available, as many mini terms are only tentative. Check the official list at http://www.ncssm. edu/miniterm/. International: Local/On-Campus: Belize; The Belize mini-term is a trip to southern Belize in which students will design and carry out biological field research projects based out of Wee Caye Marine Lab. Students must apply. Good swimming skills are required, and the trip is not suitable for those with fear of arthropods or marine life. Cost is $2,100, and a maxi mum of twenty-one students will be taken. Contact: Leslie Brinson (brin- son@ncssm.edu). Greece/Italy; This trip through Italy and Greece involves a survey of both modem cultures and history. Cost is $3,695, and a maximum of thirty students will be taken. Colonial Mexico: Topics in Aviation: This mini-term takes students to the central highlands of Mexico to see pre-Columbian and colonial sites. Students will see how these sites fit into modem Latin Ameri can culture and identity. Cost is $2,200, and a maxi mum of twenty-five students will be taken. Contact: Sarah Russell (ms- sell@ncssm.edu). Switzerlanp/Italy; Although an international mini-term, the study of physics is a part of this journey. The cities of Zurich, Lucerne, Rome, Florence, Venice, and Pisa are included in the itinerary. Cost is $2,480, and a maximum of 18 students will be taken. Contact: Gabriela Stefan (ste- fan@ncssm.edu). The science of flight, including aerodynamics, navigation, weather, and pilot training. This has been a very popu lar course in the past, so apply early. Shakespeare: Game Theory: Students will read, discuss, and watch film adaptations of Shakespeare’s works. Students will create an unique project to conclude the course. Brothers Karamazov: Students will engage with Dos toevsky’s long, extraordinary, philo sophical and literary novel. NSBE Convention: The NCSSM chapter of the Na tional Society of Black Engineers will attend the 34th national convention of the NSBE. Students will compete in engineering contests while attending the convention. Linguistics; Students learn the basics of linguis tics at dialect, language, and language group levels. The mini-tenn includes a project on a topic of the student’s choice with a partner. French Film; Students will watch French films (with English subtitles) and read cri tiques of those films. Knowledge of French is desirable but not necessary. Students will study the foundations of game theory and how it is applied. The students will design their game based on the principles of game theory. Analysis of WWII through Film; An examination of military, social, and other aspects of WWII. Films in relation to world war two will be the method for this study. The Civil War: An in-depth study of the causes, ef fects, and major events of the civil war. Films and visits to nearby historical loca tions are part of the curriculum. Bioinformatics: Bioinformatics is the use of com putational science to solve biological problems at the molecular level. Stu dents will create a small computational model as part of the course. Astronomy at PARI: Students will visit the Pisgah Astro nomical Research Institute at Rosman, NC.
