Having some off- the-fieid setbacks, the team remains optimistic and the fans continue to show enthusiasm and support. The overwhelming consensus of players and fans is that NCSSM could very well win the state title this year. "We're undefeated and I think we'll make it to the finals. The team seems to have good communication," said fan, Katy Roys. Now that the boys have had a few months to get to know each other, their team work has improved vastly. "Even though we've lost.quite a few guys, we're really working well together on and off the field," said junior Captain Michael Robinson. A lot of success on the field allegedly comes from the inspiration of historical figures. "Benjamin Franklin is like our4tn coach," said goalie Krunal Amin. The cuts for this year's team were tough. There was a lot of competition for a spot and many good players had to be dropped. "At my old school, we were mediocre, and I was one of the better players. Here, I tried out and realized NCSSM was far superior to what I was accustomed to," said Junior Brian The key to success, according to striker David OJo, is for "[a]ll [of us to] believe in having fun and expressing ourselves on the field." This philosophy seems to be effective, but "the fans make the experience; they're crazy and it makes it awesome to be on the team knowing you have that kind of support behind you," said Robinson. Fans are always full of Unicorn spirit and support for all of the home games. Coraline Badgett likes going to the games because "they are always high action and intense with lots of enthusiasm." Although the team has scored over 100 goals so far this season and hasn't been scored on nearly as much, it still has had a fair amount of competition. The most competitive and high-pressure game was said to be Raleigh Charter, due to the longtime rivalry, but NCSSM still managed to win. The state pompetition should be intense this year, but Robinson still thinks, "[The team will] make a good run at the state title." The State Soccer Competition began just a few weeks ago, and the Men's soccer team entered it having already won the Regional Championship with a 2-1 win against Southwest Onslow High School. The team already nas been undefeated in the state playoffs and is scheduled to play for the State Championship this Saturday, November 20 at NC State's soccer stadium.
