Start of NCSSM Agriculture experience
By: Ashley Jernigan
The agriculture experience
offers new opportunities
and aspirations for NCSSM
students. Agriculture classes
can open up new possibilities
for all students since
agriculture is a field that affects
every aspect of society.
The Agricultural experience
is comprised of three main
experience (SAE). NCSSM
does not currently offer
agricultural classes to
students, but this is predicted
to change.
“Agriculture affects our
lives more than you will ever
realize. There are hundreds of
stops that food will make just
to reach your table and the
aspects which are agriculture
classes, a FFA chapter, and
a supervised agricultural
agriculture industry controls
all of that,” Roy Abernathy,
class of 2011, stated.
Agriculture is a vital part to
any community. Incorporating
agriculture classes into the
curriculum would further
expand the wide range of
sciences classes at NCSSM
and appease student interest.
A survey on agriculture
classes and related topics
revealed that over one fourth
of NCSSM students have
an interest in agriculture
and the FFA.
One student
responded, “I would be
super interested, because
I want to major in Food
Science and Nutrition, so
this club would directly
supplement my future
goals.”
Chancellor. Todd
Roberts stated that,
“Other Science and Math
schools in the country
have been offering
Agriscience classes.”
STEM oriented schools
are prospering with the
■ agriculture experience
in their community and
NCSSM now has the
opportunity. Science and
mathematics are directly
related to agriculture and
agriculture-related jobs have
encouraged progress in science
and mathematics for centuries.
The National FFA
Organization is an important
part of the agriculture
experience and offers many
possible opportunities for
students. FFA members
can participate in career
development events including
Environmental and Natural

Resources, Forestry, and
Marketing Plan.
Students would also get to
take part in chapter meetings,
conventions and rallies. The
FFA also offers leadership
camps at White Lake during
the summer.
Another aspect' of the
agricultural experience is
SAE (Supervised Agricultural
Experience) projects. These
are focused projects on
agricultural topics that allow
students to develop skills in
the area that they choose. The
project could be as simple
as nurturing and observing a
plant through its growth or
as complex as creating a new
device that could assist in
agricultural processes.
The National FFA
Organization approves
SAE projects in categories
like Emerging Agricultural
Technology, Veterinary
Medicine, Wildlife
Production and Management,
and more. Having projects
like these would benefit
the NCSSM community by
alleviating stress and making
our campus beautiful and
inviting.
A seminar, “Agriculture
Experiences and the FFA”,
will be offered second and
third trimester of this year. The
seminar will teach students
about agronomy, forestry, the
National FFA Organization,
soil science, among other
topics. This marks the
beginning of agriculture into
the NCSSM experience.
Through the support of the
students and faculty, this start
has the opportunity to prosper
in the community.
