16 may 2014 the stentorian I ncssm SG Committees reflect on year’s accomplishments Continued from Page 1 the 33rd Session, the Student Senate passed its final bill, The Shared Govemanee Statement Ratification Act. The Shared Governance Statement is being approved by each of the four governing bodies of NCSSM (Administration, Faculty Senate, Staff Council, and the Student Government) and represents a commitment to a collaborative decision-making process. Other UNC-system institutions such as NC State University have already approved similar statements. With the close of the 33rd Session, committee- heads reflected upon their accomplishments and gave feedback to their successors about what to pursue differently. Academic Affairs- Teachers have begun providing students with a pre-trimester grade report as a way to increase grade transparency. Academic Affairs has also advocated for changed mid term reports from number to letter grades and sought ways to reduce Academic Dishonesty by calling for those charged to be excluded from receiving awards at the Senior Awards Ceremony. Outreach- Every two weeks, a new Vlog describing Student Government’s goals, progress, and future events was posted on the Student Government Facebook page and on a newly created YouTube Student Government page. The SG bulletin board was also updated once per trimester along with newly published legislation. In addition, SG sustainability stickers based on those used at Duke University were created. Programming- Throughout the school year, many SG events were held including Lock-Ins, Senior Breakfast, Mr. Uni, Powderpuff, Spirit Week, College Decision Day, and a new project, the Watts Block Party, led and organized by Royall Dorm Senator Kali Smith. Student Affairs- Student discounts were reconfirmed for many local restaurants. The Student Affairs Committee has also been representing the Student Body during I-Week planning meetings. Student Government increased the ability for Students to give n feedback about the PFM by advocating for the creation of the PFM committee composed of students and staff this year. Student privilege cards were created and distributed and Study Breaks occurred for cardholders. During the 33rd Session, NCSSM also received several grants from the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments that provided funding for a camera, noise-cancelling headphones in the library, and a bank of loan-out chargers. With newly elected Senior Senators and a newly appointed Executive Board, the 34th Session of Student Government plans to continue advocating for the Student Body in an efficient and effective manner for the 2014- 2015 school year. Ask Tori! Dear Tori, I’m ready for this school year to be over, but before that, there’s still so much work to do. Essays, tests, and studying for the SAT and ACT. I feel like I’m drowning in work. I want to do well on everything, but I find myself getting distracted. I really just want to have fun with my friends, especially the Seniors getting ready to graduate. How do I work up the motivation to finish the year out strong? - Jaded Junior Dear Jaded Junior, It’s so easy, especially this close to the end of the year, to put work off and get distracted, but if you just take the time to just focus and work, you can finish all you have to do! Just focus on your exams and essays for now because once finals are over, you will still have three wonderful days to hang out with your friends. Trust me, those three days will be the best three days in your NCSSM experience. Also, think about how much fun you’re going to have this summer, and hopefully the happy thoughts will keep you going. Just remember, you can TTS next year! Happy studying! - Tori As this being the last issue of the year, I would like to thank my readers. I hope that 1 offered you some helpful advice this year. Seniors, 1 wish you the best of luck for college or whatever plans you may have. Juniors, don’t stress out too much about college applications. I hope everyone enjoys those last few days before graduation. Have a great summer! - Tori A Message from the Editor-in-chiefs Dear Reader, It feels like just yesterday when we sat on Bryan Lawn as the final issue of the newspaper was distributed. We paged through the last issue, hunting for what we had been left in Senior Wills. We were sentimental for our Seniors leaving but excited that we would have another whole year together though as Editors, able to create what we wanted the newspaper to be. Little did we know how fast the year would go. Looking back, we are happy to have accomplished as much as we did. Eight issues in one year is high for The Stentorian, and this year we even featured an April Fool’s Day Issue, which was a long discussed however never before implemented idea. We will never forget the experiences we gained through writing and editing. Besides newspaper experience, we have also created a wonderful friendship through this position as co-Editors-in-Chief. The three of us now have incredible memories that we will continue to cherish. It’s only after all of the jokes, sassy remarks, and silly dance breaks to Beyonce, that we were able to stay sane through creating issues for readers to enjoy. We would like to thank our staff and all those who wrote for us for all their hard work this year. Thanks to Kanan, Sarah, Ava, Andrew, Steven, and Zihui for being such wonderful section editors. We are also thankful for all those who gave us feedback that helped us as we tried to improve our work. Most of all, we are grateful to our advisor, Mr. Kirk, for putting up with us and for supporting all our endeavours. He was there for us while we taught the writing seminar and always answered any questions we had for him. It has been a true honor working with and for you all this year. We have the highest confidence in next year’s editors and staff and are excited for the vision and dedication they bring. Sierra, Betty, and Richard: good luck and have fun! As you all read this last issue, we hope you all enjoy the memories of our time here at NCSSM. We certainly had fun putting it together!
