Welcome from Student Government
Juniors, welcome to Science
and Math!
On behalf of the entire NC
SSM Community, NCSSM’s
Student Government (SG)
would like to extend yet an
other welcome as you become
a part of the amazing group of
people that makes NCSSM so
special.
Like many things at
Science and Math, our Student
Government isn’t the same as
what you would find in your
home high schools.
NCSSM’s Student
Government is able to enact
meaningful change that
impacts the lives of students
in a variety of ways, and
collaborate with all of the
NC public universities in an
attempt to more effectively
solve problems that present
themselves at all 17 UNC
system schools.
In addition to this, SG is
in charge of chartering and
providing funding to all of
NCSSM’s clubs, organizing SG
events (such as block parties
and lock-ins), administering
privilege (priv) cards, and
meeting with various school
administrators.
With NCSSM SGA, you
truly have the power to enact
positive change!
Hopefully you’re interested
in becoming involved; if you
are, there are lots of ways you
can. Some are listed below.
Your first opportunity will
be to run for Junior Senator,
someone who represents the
junior class - Details will be
sent at the end of August and
primary elections will take
place on September 11th.
After the Junior Senator
race, you will have the option
to run for Dorm Senator,
someone who represents their
residence (done by building).
Details will be sent in mid-
September and elections will
take place on September 23rd.
All students, juniors and
seniors, are invited to attend
the first ever NCSSM SG
Town Hall meeting on August
23rd.
All are also welcome to
attend an SG Senate Meeting
- typically held every Sunday
at 7:15 PM in the Woolworth
Room (beginning 8/23/15).
Finally, you are also
encouraged to attend an SG
Executive Board Meeting
- typically held Thursdays
during lunch in the Woolworth
Room
We look forward to your
involvement and hope that you
enjoy your exciting two years
at the North Carolina School of
Science and Mathematics!
Sincerely,
NCSSM Student

A Message from the Editors-in-Chlef
Dear Reader,
The Stentorian is NCSSM’s
primary student-run news
source on campus, and is
proud to publish the works
of any students interested in
journalism and media.
This year marks the 35th
edition of what has become
an important outlet for the
NCSSM student body.
In past years. Unicorns have
been unafraid to write about
what is important to them and
to share the voices they feel
need to be heard.
Journalism today often
sways toward fulfilling
political or financial goals,
and away from true news.
As this year’s Editors-in-
Chief, we plan to continue
The Stentorian’s reputation
for excellence, and to provide
important news to the student
body.
NCSSM is often a place
where students begin to step
out of their comfort zones
and search for meaning in the
world around us. It is important
that throughout our journeys
into adulthood we develop
a habit early on of avoiding
biased learning and to attempt
to understand issues from all
angles.
Navigating through the
massive amount of media
available to us can be difficult,
and we hope to help students
find their own news sources
and strategies that they can
rely on for real information.
This year. The Stentorian
Editors-in-Chief will be
teaching a Journalism seminar
for any student wanting to learn
more about the newspaper
process and about how
journalism and mainstream
media affects our percpetion
of local, national, and world
events.
While signing up for
this seminar is certainly
encouraged, it is not a
requirement to be a contributor
to the paper. Students are
invited to write for The
Stentorian regardless of
experience level.
Simply join the Stentorian
2015-16 Facebook group to
receive information about
submission deadlines and to
propose an article.
For more information about
how to become involved as an
editor, writer, or both, please
feel free to email any of the
current editors or Editors-in-
Chief listed in the bottom right
comer.
Finally, thank you to all
who have made their way
through our first edition, and
we hope you continue to be an
excited and devoted reader in
the months to come.
Sincerely,
The Editors-in-Chief:
